1 Foods from around the world project

2 Purpose Everyone eats, but not everyone eats the same things, and the differences in diet from one culture to the next can be very dramatic. Students are encouraged to share their culture through food by inviting them to talk about and share dishes typical in their countries. This unit will teach students the basics of nutrition while integrating cultural awareness. To do this, students will need a background on nutritional concepts including reading food labels. Students will use these concepts to research a culture, specifically a food, and create a menu from the country of their choice and prepare a national dish for their class presentation. Discussions of stereotype and diversity help students gain sensitivity to the strengths and needs of different people around the world.

3 objectives Students understand cultural connections to foods, while also learning about the health benefits of some foods from around the world. Develop an awareness of the diversity of food around the globe. Identify personal biases and stereotypes related to food. Explain the value of sensitivity and openness toward diverse cultures. Compare and contrast their food choices with the eating habits of others locally and globally. Work together in teams to create a menu, food list, and nutritional information based on knowledge learned in this unit.
