33 Best Paper Based on a Dissertation Award
GDO Division Awards 2017 Best Paper Based on a Dissertation Award “An Inconvenient Truth? Interpersonal and Career Consequences of “Maybe Baby” Expectations” Jamie Lee Gloor, Technical U. of Munich Xinxin Li, National U. of Singapore Sandy Geok Peng Lim, National U. of Singapore Committee Members: Eddy Ng (Chair), Dalhousie U. Robin Church, Ryerson U. Charlice Hurst, Notre Dame U. Dana Kabat-Farr, Dalhousie U. Sanjee Perera, U. South Australia Using data from 2 studies, the authors find that subordinates who hold conscious and subconscious body fat bias perceive their overweight manager as less effective, and furthermore, when managers confirm the stereotype by engaging in abusive supervision, subordinates are less committed, perform worse, and have stronger intentions to quit – indicating that the manager is less effective in their role. Reviewers had the following to say: Obesity has not received enough attention in the literature, and as such, this paper makes a novel contribution. This paper went above and beyond in its use of multi-source and multi-study data, and its use of the implicit bias test was great. This paper researches an important organizational phenomenon and provides important practical knowledge to HR managers who are interested in knowing the conditions under which managers’ adiposity can bring worse/better employment outcomes. The careful use of 2 different measures of adiposity is a strength.

34 Best Faculty International PaperAward
GDO Division Awards 2017 Best Faculty International PaperAward Sisters doing it for themselves? A Postfeminist critique of Entrepreneurship Susan Marlow, The U. of Nottingham Helene Ahl, Jönköping U. "The paper is well-written, well researched and documented based on the relevant literature in the areas of gender, cross-cultural comparisons and diversity. It really meets the criteria for gender and diversity issues across a number of nations." Committee Members: Kate Welch (Chair), Cornell University, USA Yvonne Benschop, Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands Charlotte Karam, American University of Beirut, Lebanon

35 Best Student Paper Award
GDO Division Awards 2017 Best Student Paper Award “A Multi-Level Process Model for Understanding Diversity Practice Effectiveness” Becky Paluch, Cornell U. Lisa H. Nishii, Cornell U. Jasmien Khattab, U. of Virginia Meir Shemla, Erasmus U. Interesting study: organizational climate moderated effect of gender diversity on university performance (which was negative until adding in organizational climate) This study has several strengths including the longitudinal design and the multiple sources of data used in the sample. There is a clear logical connection from theory to design, and the finding around the moderating effect of diversity climate has useful practical implications. The authors are also very clear about the limitations of the study and identifying opportunities for future research. Committee Members: Eddy Ng (Chair), Dalhousie U. Robin Church, Ryerson U. Charlice Hurst, Notre Dame U. Dana Kabat-Farr, Dalhousie U. Sanjee Perera, U. South Australia

36 GDO Division Awards 2017 Saroj Parasuraman Award for Outstanding Paper on Gender and Diversity published in 2016 “Whitened resumes: Race and self-presentation in the labor market” Kang, S. K., DeCelles, K. A., Tilcsik, A., & Jun, S. Administrative Science Quarterly, 61(3), ) Committee Members: David Baldridge (Chair) Oregon State Univ. & National Technical Institute for the Deaf Janet Barnes-Farrell, University of Connecticut (prior year chair) Lilia Cortina, University of Michigan David Hekman, University of Colorado Eden King, George Mason University Samantha Paustian-Underdahl, Florida International University Andrew An-Chih Wang, National Sun Yat-sen University In this paper, Curtis Chan (Harvard University) and Michel Anteby (Boston University) build a theoretical model around the inequality-generating mechanism of task segregation.  The paper shines a light on how work content can serve as a deeply significant -- yet little-examined and insidious -- source of gender and workplace inequality.

37 Case Western Reserve University, USA
GDO Division Awards 2017 Scholarly Contributions to Educational Practice Advancing Women in Leadership Award, Sponsored by Simmons School of Management/Center for Gender in Organizations Diana Bilimoria Case Western Reserve University, USA The following comments about Professor Mor Barak’s work, excerpted from one of the committee member’s comments, highlight her strengths that led the committee to select her for the award: Michalle’s work on inclusion was indeed ground-breaking and has had a significant impact on the field. Her scholarship is high quality and has had a large impact. Her work addresses the institutional and organizational factors that impede women’s advancement into leadership. She has also consistently “walked her talk” by always attending to less privileged women and taking a global perspective, so she clearly embeds an intersectional perspective. Her on-line course is a direct contribution to educational practice, alongside “instructional materials (articles, books, instructors’ manuals) that are available in both print and digital forms”  Committee Members :Joy Beatty (co-chair), U. of Michigan, Dearborn Patricia Deyton (co-chair), Simmons School of Management Michalle Mor Barak, U. of Southern California Kayla (Weaver) Follmer, Penn State U. Stacy Blake Beard, Simmons School of Management

38 Derek Avery Wake Forest University
GDO Division Awards 2017 Sage Award for Scholarly Contributions for outstanding contributions which have greatly advanced the field of gender and diversity in organizations research Derek Avery Wake Forest University "His work shows breadth, depth and impact... his seminal work has focused on three main diversity topics: employee similarity/dissimilarity, diversity climate, and diverse recruitment and selection" Derek has been an active member of GDO since 1999 and Parasuraman Award for outstanding publication in gender and diversity, Dorothy Harlow Award for best conference paper.
