2 A Flipbook is an early form of… Animation
History of Animation

4 But first… where Animation began…
Early 1800s – scientists experimented with “persistence of vision” thaumatrope zoetrope Late 1800s – Thomas Edison invented the “kinetoscope” and produced 13 sec. films show this one (unnecessary) 1906 – first animated film by Stuart Blackton called “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” 1911 – Windsor McCay animated his comic strip “Little Nemo” into a 10 minute film with some hand coloring” 0:41 – 1:18 only Windsor McCay’s “Gertie the Dinosaur”

5 … and where it has come Felix the Cat was the first animated cartoon character Disney Cartoon Studios opened, Warner Bros. started in 1930 Snow White became the first full-length animated feature film 1940s-1990s – more animated characters, series, and films appeared; including stop motion, claymation, and eventually… 1995 – Toy Story became the first CG animated full-length feature film

8 How to Make a FlipBook Decide on the number of pages you want to make your flipbook. This can be any number of pages you feel that you can draw or decorate. You may want to start with a short ten-page flip book. Ensure all your pages are the same size. Secure the pages together with tape at the top. Draw your pages. To make it look as if it is moving, you change the image only slightly on each page. This may take a bit of practice. Test out your flip book. Flip through the pages and see if it looks like you would like. If you have drawn with pencil, you can go back and make small changes. Decorate your pages. Once you have drawn your image, you may want to put in backgrounds or other items. Remember to vary them only slightly from page to page. 9 Animation Process It all starts with an idea – a concept.
What is the message to be communicated? Who is the intended audience? Then characters are sketched, and a style is chosen. Hand-drawn? Photographic? Stop-motion? Then storyboarding begins… Storyboarding is similar to a comic strip – scenes are broken down, and rough snapshots are drawn. The storyboard acts as a guide for the director, they are a plan that drafts how the film will be produced. Editing may occur after the film is recorded, sound may also be added at this stage.

10 Storyboard Storyboards are a plan for the film – they allow the director to decide on how the film will look, and helps to plan the filming so that time and money are used efficiently.

11 FlipBook Process Sketch a Plan – condense your 30+ page idea into a 5-10 frame comic strip… Once your plan is approved, you may begin on cards. Get 5-10 at a time and number them as you go! Remember, 30 pages minimum!

12 Flipbook Tips Number your cards as you go!
Tracing is OK ! Start either from the beginning or end of your story (you can always rearrange your cards), draw a page then layer the next page on top of it and trace while making slight changes. Continue. Post-it notes are easy to see through! But if you want cards that you can move and rearrange, then simply trace on a light-table or on a window when it is sunny outside. Color can add a lot of emphasis to your animation – consider coloring things that are most important.

18 StoryBoard Process Sketch a Plan – condense your 30+ second idea into a 10+ frame comic strip… Once your plan is approved, you may begin to take photos. Remember to break down each movement for a smooth animation!
