2 Hate Crime EHRC has made a series of recommendations to the UK Government to tackle hate crime – calling for early interventions and stronger deterrents Since the EU referendum, police in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have reported a 57% increase in online hate crime reports The report calls on the Government to Carry out a full scale review of the operation and effectiveness of the sentencing for hate crime in England & Wales Provide stronger evidence to prove their hate crime strategies are working Work with criminal justice agencies to understand what drives perpetrators to commit hate crime & use that evidence to develop new preventatives measures

3 The report highlights:
Home Office figures that show a black man is 5 times more likely to be stop and searched by police in England and Wales MoJ figures show the rates of prosecution and sentencing from Black and Ethnic groups were 3 times higher that for the white group 40% of prisoners under 18 were from black, Asian, mixed or other ethnic groups in England and Wales Race discrimination cases have dropped by 61% since fees intro’d Reduced scope of LA & proposals for a residence test which will impact heavily on minority ethnic communities, which will reduce A2J Introduction of the mandatory telephone gateway for certain Legal Aid cases has an adverse impact on people with limited English language skills

4 Is Wales Fairer? Challenge 7:
Eliminate violence, abuse and harassment in the community: eliminate violence, abuse and harassment, particularly against women, disabled people, ethnic minority people, Muslim people and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. 68% of Local Authorities in Wales have set an equality objective that relates to IFW? Challenge 7, and specifically mentions hate crime.

5 Hate Crime Equality Objectives
Cohesive communities and tackling hate crime – people feel they are a part of ///// society and live their lives from abuse and harassment We will positively promote a fairer society……..and increasing our efforts to help tackle issues such as hate crime… To positively promote a fairer society….and monitor reporting mechanisms to tackle hate crime…. Encourage people with protected characteristics to report hate crimes…

6 Hate Crime Equality Objectives
Address inequalities in personal safety – key theme – increase the reporting of hate crime and harassment increases and take steps to reduce incidents of hate crime…. Undertake a range of work focused on safety, including hate crime…. Improve reporting of hate crime….and satisfaction of how it is handled Prevent abuse and hate crime so //// is a safer place to live and work Improving reporting of hate crime….and satisfaction with how it is handled
