Terrigal - Matcham Season 06/07 Yearbook

President's Report Bellbirds & Bellbird Supporters,
At the start of this year at preseason training I told all my fellow Bellbirds that there were only two words that I wanted everyone to live and breathe this year – CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Unfortunately we got off to a very slow start to the season across the top three grades in particular and as we approached the mid-season break I had a few of my rock solid supporters (that’s you Bowza and Jeremy) suggesting that the two words stood for a few other choice things that cannot be put into print. To the credit of everyone, we did turn things around in the latter part of the season and came home with a head of steam to finish 7th place overall in the championship (and it is worth noting that less than 200 points separated 3rd to 8th place). But are we going to give up on the dream of a Club Championship??? Hell no!!!!! I truly believe, as I know you all do, that if we put in the hard yards over the coming seasons we can and will get there. For the record, the last time we won the Club Championship was 1964/65!!! Looking through the senior grades this season: 1st grade had another year that at times promised so much to only see them just finish outside the 4 again. I know that this pained no one more than the blokes in 1’s themselves. Fellas, with a little more hard work I can see a premiership on the horizon. It’s just a question of how bad you want it. 2nd grade had a very slow start to the season, with constant changes in the team each week taking its toll. However in the run home they managed to get on a bit of a roll to finish just one win outside the 4 in the end. Pink, I know that you were disappointed to see 2’s fail to make the semis for the first time in a number of years, but with some good young players on the horizon and some older wise heads still in the mix, I can see 2’s being serious contenders again in the next year or so. As Toddy the Axe Man writes in his end of season Captains Report, as usual 3rd grade had a side on paper that looked more than capable of challenging for the title. But once again that word consistency reared its ugly head. The team just struggled to put back to back wins together and ended up finishing in 7th place. But Toddy, I think you can be proud of your efforts in your 1st year as a senior team Captain. Consistency can be an elusive beast when you have constant changes with your playing personnel. I have got to be honest, at the start of the season looking at 4th grade on paper I thought the fellas could be in for a long season. But a few rounds into the Competition they were turning out to be the real surprise package. Reece, I got to give you credit mate, you seemed to be able to pull a side together and get the very best out of all your players. In the end finishing 8th place was an admirable effort. 5th grade ended up finishing 9th but it could have been a very different story if they had finished on the other side of the ledger on a number of very close games. As Paul points out in his end of season Captains Report, the old adage of catches win matches haunted 5th grade with 40 odd chances being grassed over the season. 6th grade flew the lone semi final flag this season for the mighty Bellbirds ending the regular season with a surge to finish in 3rd place. Unfortunately that old adage it’s never easy chasing in finals came to haunt Pav and the lads as they fell just short of the chase target Umina set them in the 1st semi. Pav and lads, you can be proud of your efforts this year. With an ounce more luck (like Quirkie not getting caught off a ricochet off Pav’s helmet!!!) you could well have been contesting a grand final. We look forward to seeing you go all the way next season.

7th grade had a tough year. Unfortunately players being unavailable rolls right down the grades consolidating until you hit 7th grade. There were weeks where Shaun would lose half his side and have to fill the holes as best he could with juniors, mates of mates, etc. Shaun, I got to dips me lid to you champ. You always kept your chin up and somehow managed to field a team week in week out. And managing to take 1st innings points in 5 of your last 6 games is something the lads and yourself can really be proud of. So what can we do next season to turn things around and see all of our teams qualify for the semis? Yes, it is possible!!! The Lisarow-Ourimbah Club is living proof having just featured in the grand final of 7 of the 8 senior grades this season. While there is no magic bullet, there are a couple of clear themes from our 2006/7 experience: Constant changes to teams due to player unavailability took a serious toll. I have no doubt that settled teams (where combinations can be formed; where players know what their job in the team is; etc) perform much better. Yes I appreciate that there are times when this cannot be helped e.g. Representative Duties, family holidays, HSC, etc. But I believe that a significant number of these changes could be avoided if players approached the season with the goal of playing every game. I guess it comes down to how badly do you want to get your hands on an elusive Premiership Cap? Because at the end of the day a settled team is far more likely to achieve this. Training numbers were patchy at best and the quality of training was lacking. While we started the season with good numbers at pre-season training and the early rounds, by the time we reached the mid season break training numbers had dropped off significantly. Compounding this problem was the fact that the way we actually trained at training fell away. At the outdoor pre-season and early round sessions fielding featured as a discipline that was worked on. However by the mid season break training basically involved having an informal bat and bowl. Once again, there is no magic bullet that will solve the training problem. I appreciate that in some cases work circumstances prevent a number of players from making the normal club training session. But I truly believe in the old adage that you will play the way you train. Cast your minds back and think of how many big games we let go this season because of a simple dropped catch or missed run out opportunity for example? I guess I once again pose the question, how badly do you want to get your hands on an elusive Premiership Cap? Because if you really want one you will find a way to train (whether it be at the normal Thursday session or a separate session that works in with your family and work circumstances). But its time to get down off my soap box and look at some of the highlights from the season. So here is the Fads 10 to 1 highlights of 2006/7: Coming in at # 10 – a tough call between the late night calls I received week in week out from Steven Maher of the Express Advocate asking all the hard hitting questions re Bellbird Cricket OR the autographs I received from the entire 1st grade side on my Greg Chappell cricket hate (touching fellas…particularly the ‘reach for the stars’ motivational words). Coming in at # 9 – Scott O’Brien getting nominated by the CCCA as the Young Player of the Round for his 114 scored against Toukley in round 4. Scotty eventially winning the CCCA Young Player of the Year Coming in at # 8 – the representative feats of Alex Patterson, Kristian Mitchell & Kris Colley. Alex Patto was selected in the Central Coast U/17 side and then on the back of solid performances at the NSW Country carnival was selected for NSW Country. He was also selected in the Central Coast U/21 squad at the young age of 16!! Kristian Mitchell was given the honour of captaining the Central Coast U/16 rep team which won the Watson Shield (beating much fancied opponents Bankstown comprehensively in the final) and the Bradman Cup (which is the NSW Country championship). On the back of a number of big scores which included a hundred against Hornsby and 80 odd against the highly fancied Bankstown he won selection in the NSW Country U/16 squad. And Kris Colley, who played 4th grade this year, captained the Central Coast U/14 rep team to victory in the NSW Country Championships. On top of the captaincy duties Kris was the leading run scorer in the carnival!! Special mention must also go to Billy O’Neil and James MacNamara (who will see a lot more of in seniors next season) who also played key roles in the Central Coast U/16 rep team.

Coming in at # 7 – the 7 Bellbirds that returned 6 wickets or more in an innings this year. Noman Shoaib (3rd grade 6/24 vs. Doyalson), Dave Campbell (4th grade 6/129 vs. Umina), Josh Raatz (4th grade 6/71 vs. Toukley), Eric Morris (6th grade 7/42 vs. Mountains), Jesse Pavlovich (6th grade 6/11 vs. Woy Woy), Tim Weir (6th grade 6/35 vs. Entrance), Simon Martin (7th grade 6/77 vs. Lisarow). Well done fellas. I can some more 6 wicket hauls for all of you in the coming season. Coming in at # 6 – the 12 Bellbirds that posted centuries this year. Chris Henry (1st grade 118 vs. Woy Woy and 117 vs. Kincumber), Scott O’Brien (1st grade 114 vs. Toukley), Dane Stevenson (1st grade 102* vs. Entrance), Gareth Hurst (1st grade 119* vs. Lisarow), Tony Formby (4th Grade 116 vs. Kincumber), Stu Golding (5th grade 126 vs. Woy Woy), Dane Hillman (5th grade 125* vs. Doyalson), Nathan Miller (5th grade 101* vs. Gosford), Dave Hardy (6th grade 124* vs. Kincumber), Lee Pawlak (6th grade 101 vs. Woy Woy), Damon Brown (7th grade 101 vs. Narara), and Matt Walker (7th grade 102 vs. Gosford), Jamie Patterson (7th Grade 126 vs. Entrance). Well done fellas. I can see plenty more hundreds in all of you. Coming in at # 5 – Dave Hardy winning the District Batting Award for 6th grade with 459 runs at an average of over 65. What makes this particularly special as far as I’m concerned is that Dave makes the long trek from the other side of Sydney each weekend to play cricket with his Bellbird brothers. Well done Dave!!! Coming in at # 4 – notching up 100 grade games for the mighty Bellbirds is an honour that was shared by just 35 Bellbirds as at the end of the 2005/6 season. Joining this illustrious group this season are Grant (the prodigal son) Julienne, Chris (Steven Maher) Henry and Dane Stevenson. Well done fellas. You have all given great service to the Bellbird family so far and we look forward to many games to come. Coming in at # 3 – smashing Mountains in all contested grades to bring the Pugsley Cup back to its rightful place. Coming in at # 2 – the stellar career of Andrew (Radis) Radcliffe. Radis announced his retirement at the mid point of this year after 180 odd games for the club. Amongst his long list of on-field achievements include almost 6,000 runs (including 4,284 in 1st grade) at an average of just over 34; the leading century maker for the Club with 8 centuries; 42 fifties; the 1st grade leading run scorer in a season 6 times; the 2nd grade leading run scorer in a season 3 times; 5th on the all time leading run scorers for the club; 2nd and 4th wicket partnership records in 1st grade; a member of the last 1st grade premiership winning team of 1987/88; a member of the 2nd grade 2004/5 premiership winning team…..the list just goes on an on. Radis, what can we say? You have been a great Bellbird mate. Lets hope we see you back playing on the concrete when Jack and Lloyd make the jump into seniors in the next few years. Coming in at # 1 – there is no greater honour that can be bestowed on a Bellbird than Life Membership!!!! The latest member of this very prestigious club is Stu (Gold Finger) Golding. Stu is a Bellbird through and through. He has been at the Club for over 25 years and has always been an active contributor both on and off the field. He has played over 140 games for the Club (from 1s to 6s), scoring just shy of 4,000 runs at an average of around 21 with a high score of Congratulations Stu on this great honour. The success of a cricket club is of course not just all about on-field performance. Off the field there is a long list of activities that need to be taken care of including setting and collecting fees, selecting teams, arranging social events, paying the bills, generating sponsorship income, liaising with the CCCA, etc, etc, etc……At the end of the day unless these things are performed well then our members will not enjoy being part of the club and consequently on-field performance will ultimately suffer i.e. the old adage of a happy team will be a successful team, So how have we gone in the off-field department this year? From a financial point of view we have had a solid year. We managed to generate increased sponsorship income by bringing on a few much appreciated additional sponsors; and this was further bolstered by some excellent funds raised by the trivia night held at the Bowling Club and our social club esky and bbqs. Bottom line was that this allowed us to keep our fees fixed at the same as they were the year before. But looking ahead it is likely that the costs of playing cricket on the coast are going to continue to rise year on year due to ground shortages, water restrictions, ever increasing insurance costs, etc. So we are going to be under pressure to find additional sponsorship and/or social club revenue or be faced with little choice but to increase annual fees. I guess what I’m saying here is that this is a year in year out battle and we need to be ever vigilant and not rest on our laurels.

President's Report continued
From a social events (or fun) point of view I would say 2006/7 was a mixed report card. On the positive side of the ledger the trivia night at the bowling club was a raging success. We had a great roll-up and everyone had a great time with the master of ceremonies Rick Julienne doing a fantastic job. The Double Wicket day was also its usual success with a big crowd of players & supporters taking part at Paul Oval. So much so that we may have to look at changing the format next year if we don’t want to be finishing in the dark!!! And a number of the social club bbqs held at Duffys each month were well attended (particularly when the President was shouting for a clean sweep!!!). However attendance numbers back at the bowling club on Saturday nights and other club events like bowls days etc could be improved. I appreciate that many players find it hard enough as it is just getting a leave pass away from the family for half of Saturday. But the bottom line is that our sponsorship and social club income is dependent on the support of our members. In the year ahead we are looking at days at the gallops and dish lickers as other possible club outings. So watch this space. We are also always looking for new ideas so please don’t hesitate to toss any ideas up. Looking towards the future, I believe that the strongest junior club on the Coast has us in good stead. This year our juniors fielded more teams than any other club on the coast. 5 junior teams made the grand final and of these we ended up winning premierships in the U16As & 11Bs. I think we will see some very promising juniors making the jump to seniors in the next few seasons. I have not doubt waffled on for way to long (and probably killed a few too many trees in printing all this) but before I close I have a few folks that we need to thank. Thanks to our main club house sponsor the Terrigal Bowling Club. We look forward to continuing our partnership over the coming years and I’m confident we will repay your faith in us with both a 1st grade premiership and a Club Championship in the near future. Thanks also to our other sponsors – Colin Grainger and the team at Property Central (looking to buy or sell a house, I couldn’t recommend them highly enough); the team at the Snapper Spot (who hands down whip up the best fish and chips on the coast); Gareth Hurst at Massage Remedy (who’s hands can perform miracles if you have a niggle that needs sorting out); Andrew Radcliffe and the team at Green Point Veterinary Hospital (who take it from me take damn good care of that pooch or tabby you love); Peter Watson and the team at the Drive-in Meat Market at Long Jetty (best steak and snags on the Coast); and the drive-through bottle shop at the Terrigal Hotel (who take it from me have a damn fine selection of red and white wines and every type of ice cold beer under the sun). Without the continued support of sponsors like these then playing cricket on the coast would be significantly more expensive for our members. Thanks to Dane, Pink, Toddy, Reece, Paul, Pav and Shaun for investing the huge amount of time and personal sacrifice that it takes to Captain a senior team. Take it from me people, being a captain is a tough gig. These guys have all put in huge efforts. Thanks fellas. Thanks to Pink, Dags, Clarrie and Noel for running the Social club esky, 1st grade home game bbqs, and the double wicket day (and I mean day!!!) bbq. The work you guys do not only brings in valuable social club income which helps keep our fees down but also just gets our members together sharing stories over a cold beer or two. The positive impact this has on club morale should not be under estimated. Cheers fellas. Thanks to the club Committee members Noel, Pav, Justin, Mitch, Geoff and Gareth. Take it from me, these folks all put in a huge effort in the background to keep the club ticking along. Team, I have really enjoyed working with all of you in my 1st year as President. I could not have done it without you all and look forward to working with you all again in the seasons ahead. Thanks to big Lazza for continuing to work on our web site. Thanks to Danny for putting the significant amount of time in that it takes to pull together all the stats. And lastly, thanks to all the wives, girlfriends, and mums and dads for sticking by our players for what I know feels like a very long season at times. I am a firm believer in the old adage ‘behind every good man is a great woman’. Thanks to you all. Cheers and see you all in 2007/8 Andrew McFadden (aka Fads, yothu, yogi, etc) President – Terrigal-Matcham Cricket Club

FIRST GRADE REPORT Well, another year, another mid table result for the TMCC 1st grade Bellbirds. It seems to be the same thing year in and out for this side. A season that begins with so much promise, enthusiasm and vigour, and ends up in reflections of what might and could have been... Throughout the year, we, as a team showed glimpses of why teams in our competition are wary of playing us. For half of the season’s games we dominated teams, racking up big scores in excess of 280 runs or chased down targets for the loss of only a few wickets. We were able to achieve this through our “new look” top order getting us off to the start we needed, and our bowlers backing them up with controlled lines and length. Our top four batsmen had very successful seasons, scoring between them, over 1200 runs. Congratulations to Chris Henry on his huge year, amassing over the magical 500 runs (including 2 hundreds and a 90). Batting in his usual style, Chris “nurdled” his runs before taking the game to the opposition bowlers by whacking them back over their heads or to the square leg boundary. Scott O’Brien made 300+ runs (including his maiden First grade century). Scott’s approach to batting in the top order this season came with the tag of hit or miss. His hundred against Toukley was a pleasure to watch, so were his innings against Doyalson, Narara and Kincumber. Scott seemed to derive a sick pleasure of tormenting opening fast bowlers by depositing the ball back over their heads, or the point and square leg boundary’s. The ultimate team man/player, Johnny “Sauna” Kovac, took on the challenging role of first drop this season. John was the thorn in many a teams side, playing some extremely important innings for us. It seems as though John was looking to introduce some West Indian flair to Central Coast cricket, unleashing some back foot drives that Ritchie Richardson would be in awe of. John’s attitude of always having the team as first priority was exemplary, with his grit and fight enabling him to reach 50 in our last game against Wyong. At times, our middle order fired, piling on the runs when needed, but also seemed to give away their wickets during vital stages of the year. Tim “Changa” Bladwell got off to a blazing start to the season with a typical entertaining and stylish 40, and “Boof” Fitler and Pete Finaly provided us with some renowned cameo hitting, launching some long bombs in the process. A big congratulations also to Gareth Hurst who showed us that he is more than capable of success in 1st grade. Gareth scored his maiden 1st grade century against Lisarow and scored an impressive 88 against Kincumber. “The Cougar” also introduced us to many “forms of fine art” during the season. The art of ground fielding, the art of catching; but most importantly, the art of spin bowling! “The Cougar” took 2 very important wickets in our outright victory against Gosford, and at one stage, someone from the crowd was overheard asking, “Why is Ashley Giles playing for Terrigal??”

1st Grade report - continued Our bowling, at times was magnificent. Strangling and starving opposition batsmen of runs with controlled areas, which resulted in our team rolling some very big batting line-ups. And at others times, we leaked runs like a broken water line! Congratulations to our newest Bellbird, Brad Binns, who took a 5’fa against Mountains in his debut match for the club!!!! A special mention to Pete Finlay who bowled with his usual guile, unmistakable length and remarkable lines. For any young bowler out there, Peter is the perfect example to watch in the art of swing and seam bowling. Once again, Craig “Count Dracula” Fitler utilised the new ball early, providing us with early breakthroughs and John Kovac come into his own as a partnership breaker. It was also pleasing to see young Alex Patterson develop throughout the season as our new ball bowler. “The Emo” worked up some serious pace in the second half of the season, and had batsmen ducking for cover or standing at square leg during some heated spells. Josh “Frankie” Dwyer, began to fulfill his potential, as a front line 1st grade bowler when his opportunity arose. Josh showed glimpses of what his is capable of doing with the ball against Kincumber, getting 3 quick wickets with his late inswingers and bowling an immaculate spell against Gosford in their second dig. Bigger things are to come from this guy. We also had a number of junior Bellbirds break through into our side this year. These guys were presented with the inaugural 1st grade cap, which had their playing number emblazoned on it. Kristian “Tweener” Mitchell batted solidly and took some absolute screamers at gully, whilst Nick “I go to the gym” McGeever bowled well, taking wickets in his debut game for the side. In his first full season of 1st grade, Tim Bowring’s keeping was wonderful, taking some spectacular catches (especially down the leg side) and demolishing the stumps with every stumping opportunity. Somehow, Tim also found time to promote his new coaching manual “Puddles - How to bat properly in 1st grade on The Central Coast” to many opposition batsmen. To those who were fielding around the bat, these little gems of advice from Tim were quite timely!!!! To Darryl Bateup, Clint “Pinky” Drew and Geoff Patterson. Thankyou so very much for playing in our side this year. You guys unselfishly came to the rescue on a number of occasions. It is this kind of club spirit and support that you showed; by placing your clubs needs first that should be followed by all members of our club. Thank you. Last but not at the very bit least. CLARRIE BOWRING. What an absolute bloody legend. Clazza took it upon himself to be 1st grade manager this season. On behalf of the team and myself, I want to thankyou for so much you have done for us this year. Clarrie, you are the penultimate clubman. Clarrie organised the bowling machine for practices and pre-game warm-ups, made up and ran drinks, helped with the set up and packing up of Duffy’s Road, bbq’s, the covers and was ALWAYS a positive supporter of our game. Your help is so greatly appreciated. We thank you. To all our supporters throughout the year. Rachael, Nikki, Brin, Kelsy, Mrs Bowring and Amy, Mrs Henry, The Dufty’s, The Pitchford’s, Team O’Brien, Team Finlay and Team Fitler. Thankyou. Apologies if I’ve left anyone out. Once again, another season gone, another season of what could have been. STEVO – First Grade Captain

2nd Grade Report Another year has come and gone for second grade with the team just missing a spot in the finals, finishing equal fifth on the table. With the team getting of to a shaky start in the early rounds due to player losses unavailability. It was nice to come out after Christmas with a more settled side and win the last four games. A number of players got the chance to step up a level this year, congratulations to them all. Well done to Nick McGeever for a good year and getting a start in the firsts toward the end. We also had some of the juniors break into second grade. Kristian Mitchel (year), Billy O’Neil (3 games), James McNamara (1 game). Congratulations boys! Especially Kristian, for the good year he had. Winning a start in 1st grade and captaining the winning Central Coast Bradman Cup side. There were not a lot of real standout performances this year, however there were some consistently good ones to note. The ever consistent Daryl Bateup showing why he has been around so long with the ball, also showing some great quality with the bat. Andrew McFadden showing what he can do with the bat posting a number of consistent scores, best being 96 with the bat. To Glen Mortel for capturing some of the confidence and flair he has shown in the past taking out the batting with good consistent scores. On a final note I would like to congratulate Mitch Bowring for his efforts in the final few rounds, getting thrown into the spin position and taking a bag of wickets. Thanks to all the players and supporters for a top year. Thanks Clint Drew - Captain
9
Third Grade Report As this was my first year as a captain of a grade side, firstly I would like to thank everyone who played 3rd grade this year. Not only did you make it a very enjoyable experience, you also made it easy with the way you all understood and excepted that some times tough decisions had to be made. As usual 3rd grade had a side that looked unstoppable on paper, but once again it was consistency that let us down. Every game this season there was always at least one player who stood out. But unfortunately in those games that we lost, that stand out was a lone soldier. This season was filled with many good performances and I will try to mention every one but as we had a thousand players this year I may miss a couple I'm sorry if you are the unlucky ones. Sam Collins was new to the club this year and performed strongly with the bat throughout the season. His first knock for the club was a half ton against Woy Woy. He consistently got starts for the rest of the season. Stoltzy, who performed so well in the lower grades last season started this season a bit scratchy. But when he found the middle of his bat he was almost unstoppable. He finished the season in 2nd grade and in blistering form. Mick Dean, Mick Wilson and Mark O’Brien all had up and down seasons and although it wasn’t always working with the bat, the team spirit that these guys show was always memorable. The big man, Fads, did nothing in the games that he played in third grade so I dropped him back up to 2nd’s. His partner in crime Justin OMJ, had a horrible time in the field at the start of the season but to his credit never gave up and finished the year strong with a few catches. I need to apologise to Gamal as he was horribly under used by me this season. but when I did use him he always performed well with both bat and ball, except when he opened against Doyalson and was caught behind first ball. Sorry “G” it had to be mentioned. Three players who not only put everything into there cricket, but also their sledging were Mitch Bowring, Cam Gray and Dave Campbell. Not only did these three take wickets with their sledges but on a few occasions they nearly started fights. All three will be players to watch next season. Ken Campbell was again a champion this season. When you’re in a jam call up “K C” and he will get on to his “Bra Boys”. The man knows just about everyone on the central coast. Also performing well with the ball this year were, Dan Blacka, Nathan Rea and Noman Shoaib. All three are natural wicket takers and proved that once again this year. This year also saw a lot of up and coming talent. With Justin Frost shining late in the year. Lee Pawlak showed his worth in the last two games of the season taking a couple of wickets and scoring a match winning fifty. Andy Graham showed great promise this year with a couple of solid performances with the bat, not to mention the couple of screamers he took in the field. All in all I think that it was a successful season. Sure we didn’t make the finals but I think that every one enjoyed being part of the team and had fun playing cricket with there mates. I’m sure that next year the bellies will be the team to beat in their quest for the ever elusive 3rd Grade premiership. With some very dominate players coming up trough the grades and some very talented juniors on the way it should be a piece of cake. Have fun and see you next year. Todd Johnson - Captain

Reece Mahoney - Captain
4th GRADE SEASON REPORT Well the season of 4th grade was one that offered so much promise but left very little reward, we were too inconsistent, when our batting performed our bowling didn’t and vice versa! The 4th Grade team used a lot of players during the year which I think could be said for all grades this year, but the team showed that it had a lot of talent that should be coming up through the grades in the next couple of years. In the batting it was the experienced Tony Formby who led the way, a century and two half centuries proved valuable, His innings of 115 against Kincumber was easily the best of the season. The skipper led the way too after a five year absence scoring three half centuries. Andrew Graham proved himself as an opener at the end of the season with a couple of innings of note, Kris Colley showed an enormous amount of potential that we should see the fruits of next year, and every game Stu Golding played he contributed with a handy knock. In the bowling the canny veteran Mick Beal led the way, the old warhorse just keeps going, tieing the batting down and snaring the edges on a regular basis, Greg Flaherty made a fine debut for the club also taking many handy wickets, Cam Gray was at the batsmen all year both with the ball and his mouth, and Paul Miles proved just as handy with the bat as he did the ball, a valuable all-rounder. The fielding was probably the big disappointment we dropped too many catches at vital times and the first half of the season suffered from using five different keepers in the first six games, Mark O’Brien provided a valuable lift in the latter half of the season. The team showed it could match it with anyone but we unfortunately we could not win the close ones, hopefully most of the boys will be back in various grades performing better than this year learning from the lessons of this season. Reece Mahoney - Captain 2006/ th Grade Report With 5 wins and 6 losses we missed the semi finals. Reflecting on the season there were opportunities in all but 1 of the losses where the result could have gone our way. In analysing what we could have done to win those games the following basics of cricket came home to roost. Dropped Catches.. We dropped 43 catches for the season. The old adage “catches win matches” Batting our allotted overs.. Only on 1 occasion did we bat for the full 80 overs. We scored 3 centuries for the season and 7 half centuries. Player turnover. Like most of the other grades our playing personnel changed regularly which didn’t allow us to get into a winning rhythm. There were, however a lot of positives from the season and rather than dwelling about the “what if’s I ‘d like to highlight them.
11
2006/ th Grade Report Stu Golding’s batting,. An underrated batsman and great “clubman” Marty Bladwell’s- all-round performance with bat & ball David Campbell’s’ competitive nature & wicket taking ability. Good to see him progress to the higher grades after consistent performances. Manny Conditsis’s “close in” catching with reflexes younger than his age, always encouraging team mates. Andrew Clark’s uncanny eye (the reverse pull shot v The Mountains). Charlie Lambert’s glove work and as the season progressed his batting stepped up. Dane Hillmans’- all-round ability with a nice century, great movement with the older ball & involved in 5 run outs throughout the season. Tim Weirs’ passion to improve every time he walks on the field, went through a bit of a slump after some early form, however worked hard and turned it around in the last couple of games. Jesse Pav’s- Desire to contribute in each match. A match winning performance vs. Narara where he cleaned the tail up for a 2 run win. Bowled better than his figures suggested and needed a bit of luck, which seemed to escape him. His batting- showed signs of what he is capable of. Will be a better player next season as a result. Eddy Ryan’s’ – support of all team members, especially the young guys coming into the team. With Eddy everyone is equal and given his experience I’m sure that was absorbed by the players around him. Andrew Bunce- His stroke play is worth admission and I was disappointed he couldn’t commit to the season because of work, not only for 5th grade but more so the club. Nathan Miller- You’ll hopefully see a lot more of him next season- Can Bowl, Can Bat, Can Catch & Field. Absolutely destroyed the attack against The Haven Trent Miller- Another name you’ll see more of in coming seasons, good batting technique & handy bowler. Josh Raatz, Simon Martin- 2 young quicks that are genuine wicket takers and “live” for the game. Keep up the passion boys and I’m sure you’ll see the rewards soon. Mark Connell & Phil Dent- Great clubmen (and Left handers!), work & injury kept them from playing most of the season, however it would be great for the club to see them back in 07/08. Mark scoring his highest score for the club (82) with a broken toe in Round 8- combined with Dane Hillman featured in a 202 run partnership. Lee Pawlak, Chris Hayden, & Nick Freeman –great kids who have plenty of potential and turn up every week & to training regularly- I’m sure their names will feature in higher grades regularly in season’s to come. A special mention to the following young players that performed well in their games this season in 5’s. Jake Elder, Justin Avendano- U15’s- 2 leg spinners to look out for in the near future, both can bat well also. It was good to see Jake take 3 wickets & score his 1st runs in 5th Grade, with Justin being unlucky. Nick Souden- U16’s- swing bowler who can handle himself with the bat in the top 6 and will only grow in confidence the more he competes in seniors. A special thanks to Fads and Pav for all their support & enabling the selection process to reward players who have been consistent. I truly believe the club is heading in the right direction and the talented young guys exposed to higher grades this season will hold us in good stead for future success as a club. 6th Grade End of Season report (2006/07) The 2006/07 6th grade had a frustrating year of cricket with many constant changes earlier in the year unsettling any rhythm that was starting to grow. The team had a mix of young up and coming players with some wise old heads trying to share their experience with the youngsters. The first game of the season saw the team set a new club record for the biggest victory in club history, winning by an innings and 263 runs. When a team does so well, it invariably leads to promotions and we lost many of our stars to the higher grades. It was with a sense of pride to watch the successful exploits of guys like Nathan Rea, Lee Pawlak & Jesse Pav in the higher grades after their dominating performances in the first game. Leading the way, this season, with the batting was Dave Hardy who accumulated a mountain of runs with consistent solidness in the middle order. Dave’s consistency saw him gain the CCCA batting award for 6th grade. Pav & Dennis Stevenson continued their amazing run of partnerships as they average 50+ in partnerships when batting together. Wayne Goodley was an explosive addition to the team from round 2 and his calculated assaults on bowling attacks allowed some high totals, quick run rates and more importantly allowed us time to chase victories. Steve Bowers linked the openers to the middle order with solid contributions and was also capable of assaults that pumped up the run rates. The bottom half of the batting just about contributed every time they were called on to perform. However strong our batting was, a special mention must be said to the bowling attack. Playing on possibly the smallest ground in the competition, our bowling average was the lowest in our grade and one of the lowest in all grades in the CCCA. This was reflected by the way we performed as a bowling unit, hunting together in packs with solid support from our fielders, both with ground fielding and catching with guys like Nick Freeman, Quirky, Josh Raatz, Juan Bradbery & Chris Heydon excelling. Eric Morris managed his most successful season with the club, as did Dean Yates, whilst James Burt, Simon Martin, Josh Raatz, & Dave Hardy chipped in with both economical and wicket taking spells when called on to bowl. No doubt the big improver for the season was Steve Quirk, who excelled when taking the first change spell instead of the new ball. The latter part of the season saw Quirky really step up and bowled both wicket taking & economic spells showing he is ready for the higher grades with both bat & ball. The team overall responded to all challenges put to it culminating in our amazing run home when we nominated what had to be done to get into the semi final series, and proceeded to deliver on our targets to come home in 3rd place. The team was a cohesive supportive group that continually fed off our successes as we celebrated each others individual achievements. The lasting impact of the group is the many records we shattered and set throughout the season that will show up in our stats for season 2006/07. Many thanks to everyone who filled in and played for the team, it was both a pleasure and privilege to be involved with this group. A final mention to Amanda Pitchford for the immaculate scorebook she presented after every game. Peter Pavlovich - Captain

7th Grade Report For 7th grade in 2006/2007 it was definitely a season of two halves as they say. The first half of the season saw Sevens go winless. We had a few close calls but had trouble putting sides away when we had a sniff of a win. The second half of the season saw Sevens finally getting some wins together. Of the last 6 games of the season, we scored 1st innings points in 5 of the games. Batting wise, Matt Walker had a good year notching a century against Gosford Red and was always looking for some runs batting at number 3. Riley Murphy, in his first season with the club, was great value in the middle order not only in runs scored but the manner in which he scored them. But the surprise was Peter Monico who, often as opener, played some very handy innings to keep the side together. Damon Brown (against Narara) and Jamie Patterson (against Entrance Blue) also deserve a mention for their hundreds this season. Monerz also was again handy with the ball as was the only player in the club this season to achieve the 20 wickets/200 runs double. His new ball partner Gav Haddrick also had a good season with the ball often getting that vital breakthrough in oppositions’ top order. Tim McLachlan, Matt Walker and yours truly also chipped in with some handy wickets through the season. It is a credit to the side that they kept at it especially after the poor start to the season. With a little more consistency in the batting and by taking our chances in the field (a few games got away from us due to dropped catches), it may have been a different season. Sevens did see quite a few players through the season and my thanks to all of those, especially the juniors, who turned up and gave it their best when needed. And thanks to those who form the core of the team through the season. Your efforts were greatly appreciated and hope to see you all in the whites again next season. Shaun Cronin - Captain

Under 21's The U/21s team had an up and down year (quite literally if you had seen Dizzy Dwyer’s spell at Adcock), with a monstering win over Mountains, a narrow loss to Umina and a loss to Woy Woy. The 1st game of the hangover comp was against Umina or should I say Ben Smith with the bellbirds youth going down in a nail biter. The lads had everything against them ranging from the effects of the previous Saturday Night to Giffo giving out a mankat which was EVENTUALLY overruled. When the Paki walk-off was over and the cricket started back up “The Flea” and “Grimace” were our top run scorers with half centuries to each of them and they led us to a defendable score. After the lunch break (At the Ettie) Gambrilla led the attack with some excellent erratic bowling and an amazingly foul mouth which the younger lads like Frost and Souden really learnt a lot from, however with scrappy fielding all round and a fairly moderate total the boys went down fighting. Rounds 2 and 3 were both non-events for the Bell-Ends with a wash out against Gosford (which our mate Ben Smith scored 200 against) and a forfeit win against Kincumber. So it was onto the mountains. With a new look team and a wanting for revenge the Bell-Ends tore the Mountains kids apart right from the 1st ball with “A-Rod” Patterson smashing the delivery into the creek. Scotty-O “chipped” in to with a ton grinded out, off about 70 balls. And with a few late contributions at the end of the innings saw the score up to 300 which the mountains never looked like getting… apart from Patto’s 1st ball which was cut for six… Oh and Dizzy’s first spell of bowling which went 6 overs, 2 maidens, 0 for 82, with one of the deliveries stopping in at the Gossy RSL for a quick beverage! But in the end our boys just wanted it more and stung quick wickets together to tear the Mountains middle order apart which included an amazing direct hit run out from the fence from “Allan” Patterson! The game was played in good spirits apart from when David “Versace” Campbell threw the kitchen sink in to sledging a 14yr old and a misheard sledge which was apparently taken as a racial slur through word of mouth. I don’t want to name names but Grimace definitely did not say the “N” word. Then we played Woy Woy 1st grade and they won. We rocked up between 20 – 5 mins to start and they had been there for an hour doing fielding practice… in skins! Those lads won the toss and put 300 against us, and even though Duffy’s was playing like a 400+ ground that day we weren’t good enough to chase it. After S.O.B and A-rod again got us off to a great start, Toddy “The Lumberjack” Johnson and “Verno” Morris were amazingly disappointing with the bat starting a collapse which saw the Bellies Boys lose a lot for not many and Woy winning the game. The highlight from the game was an amazing sledge from Jesse Pav (who wasn’t playing) on the Woy skipper when he kicked the ball from 3 metres inside the rope, over the fence. Apparently the fielder didn’t find it as funny as we or the rest of his team did with a massive sook about it. Once again not to name names but grow up Lee Taylor! In conclusion the comp was awesome fun and it is a promising sign for the Bellies future. Hopefully the boys can go about 3 steps further next time and claim the hangover comp as their own!
