1 SCD Computer Room Networking Basil Irwin (et. al
SCD Computer Room Networking Basil Irwin (et. al.) Senior Network Engineer Network Engineering and Technology Section (NETS) April 6, 1999

2 Introduction

3 SCD Computer Room is Focus of Three Major Networking Functions
Focus of SCD Networking Focus of UCAR Networking Focus of Wide Area Networking

4

5 SCD Computer Room Contains Two Types of Networks
The NCAR MSS’s SAN HIPPI Network So-called “backend” network Not an IP-based network Virtual-channel-switching MSS Group maintains the MSS HIPPI network Packet-based LANs/MANs/WANs So-called “frontend” networks Mostly IP Plus a tad of AppleTalk, DECnet, NetBIOS, etc. NETS maintains these networks

6

7 Conceptual User Access To SCD Resources

8 Conceptual User Access to SCD’s Supercomputers and the NCAR MSS
Local NCAR/UCAR user access Dialup NCAR/UCAR user access Remote university user access

9

10 Actual SCD Computer Room Networks

11 SCD Computer Room Networking
Supercomputer networks Connects supercomputers to each other and to external services Use to be exclusively FDDI Now lots of Fast Ethernet (100-Mbps) too Soon to include 1000-Mbps Computer Room Host LANs Connect to SCD/UCAR Servers: DNS, , NFS, SAMBA, login, authentication, web, etc. Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, FDDI, and ATM To include 1000-Mbps in the future

12 SCD Computer Room Networking (cont.)
Backbone LANs for UCAR networking Mainly ATM Some Fast Ethernet (100-Mbps) Focal point for wide area networking UCAR dialup access: the RAS 46 total dialups (soon to be 69) Includes ports (soon to be 6) Includes 1 test line

13 Types of Networking Equipment
Cisco 1010 ATM switches (5) Cisco 5500 Ethernet Packet Switches (20) Cisco 7507 Routers (5) Cisco 4700 Router (1)

14

15 ML Cabling Hub

16 Hub For ML Site Cabling Cabling hub for the Mesa Lab site
Cabling hub for the computer room itself

17

18 SCD Computer Room Futures

19 Going to 1000-Mbps For hosts: For networks:
OC-12 ATM (622-Mbps) Gigabit Ethernet (1000-Mbps) For networks: Host & network decisions can be different Can have mixed environment if needed Mixed 1000-Mbps networking types Mixed 1000-Mbps host-connection types Planning documents for 1000-Mbps upgrades

20 The End
