2 Cerebral Palsy Sport is the country’s leading national sport disability sport charity supporting people with cerebral palsy to reach their sporting potential Our vision is to support people with cerebral palsy to reach their life potential through sport and active recreation. Our mission is to improve quality of life for people with cerebral palsy and other physical impairment through sport, physical activity and active recreation. Our aim is to raise aspirations, promote inclusion and support people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities to play, participate and enjoy sport and active recreation.

3 What CP Sport does We are a grassroots organisation, Entry to development level Creating opportunities local for people to have their first experience with sport or activity We offer support and guidance to organisations and people with CP and physical impairments. We coordinate, run and promote activity across the country. We advise on local, regional and national opportunities, supporting the talent pathway. We gather insight and research. We challenge peoples perceptions and attitudes. We develop sustainable partnerships.

4 The Facts 1 in 5 people, 39% of England’s population have a long standing limiting disability or illness 47% of disabled people have a long term health condition 24,620 of these have Cerebral Palsy Cerebral Palsy can affect a number of impairments including; Speech Mobility Dexterity 36% of disabled people have mobility problem of which CP is a dominant condition 1 in 400 people born with CP 1800 babies each year born with CP

5 What is Cerebral Palsy? A lifelong condition arising from damage to motor areas of the brain that can occur before or during birth Can also occur later in life through traumatic head injury, stroke or similar condition It is a non progressive brain lesion which causes variable impairment of coordination, tone, strength of muscle action and impacts on posture an movement CP except in the mildest form can be evident in the first months Most common cause of motor disability in children CP is permanent but not unchanging There is no known cure

6 Types of Cerebral Palsy
Spastic – present in around 75-88% of people with CP, muscle tone is stiff and tight limiting range of movement. Ataxic – 4% of people with CP, effects ability to activate correct muscle pattern. Balance is affected and person may have poor spatial awareness. Dyskinetic – 15% of people with CP, uncontrolled involuntary, sustained or intermittent muscle contractions. Many people will have a mixture of these. Quadriplegia Diplegia Hemiplegia

7 Conditions / problems linked to CP
Many with CP will have a secondary condition such as Pain Hip displacement Scoliosis and contractures Intellectual Communication Epilpsey Behaviour disorder Incontinence Sleep disorder Vision Hearing

Table Cricket – Community Cricket League. SportStart–Multisport programme Adapted Sports – identifying the gaps in provision Coaching resources and CPD courses.

12 Key points to remember No 2 people with CP are the same!
Speak with the person or there parents / carers Venue consideration – ensure it is accessible for all mobility aids - consider temperate people with CP are more susceptible to hot/cold temperatures. Communication – speech is often affect so ensure a number of ways to communicate with person and for person to communicate. Visuals / ipads Length of sessions / workshops – people with CP can tire quicker than others. Reasonable amount of information / tasks given at any one time Regular comfort breaks
