2. Writing Style Review
The PRF, OPR, and EPR forms are what supervisors use to convey performance & potential
Raters must analyze the effect their words have when viewed from the reviewer’s perspective
Some questions to ask:
Is the message clear, accurate, and to-the-point?
Does what is written detract from accomplishments or waste space?
Can what is written be misunderstood or is it insulting?
Avoid:
Overuse of unnecessary words (His, Her, that, a, an, the, etc.)
Overused punctuation (mentioned later in slides!)
First name usage (use of first-name should be believable and appropriate)
Repeating single events in all blocks sends a message the member didn’t accomplish much during the reporting period

Some questions to ask (continued):
Are the Rater, Additional Rater, and Reviewer (where used) blocks visually different style-wise?
If too similar, impression is the report was written by a single person
Passive vs Active Voice: write actively, doers before verbs
“pursuit of” vs “pursued”
Are the bottom-line recommendations consistent between the Rater and Additional Rater blocks?
Are they consistent w/previous reports? If not, rationale must be explained on Fact Sheet
Are the PME and future job recommendations consistent with previous reports and the SURF?

4. Writing Style Review (Cont.)
Stratification:
include the population size when assigning a rank order
If desiring a # within the A3O pool, provide back up support from functional or appropriate level award win/nomination
Stratification pool clarification is OK (#1 of 50 CGOs!  vs. #1 of 50!)  The pool must be credible by not parsing it too finely (i.e. - #1 of 50 CGOs who volunteer to work Saturdays)
How soon can you replace a #1 person after they depart?  Check competitive categories.  If they will compete against each other, you should probably re-word the verbiage to protect your signature.  If they won’t compete on the same board, you can probably change #1s as soon as the individual departs.

Situation/Task you were given, the Action you took, and the Results (the STAR technique)
BGen Tuck Style
Use an impact lead-in followed by an “!”; close first & last with “!”
Policy on max number of “!”?  Abide by the AFI.  There is no policy on a max number, but as mentioned, don’t overuse to where it is visually distracting or the punctuation loses its meaning.
1st Line: Leadership Line! Designed to get the reviewer’s attention and leave a favorable impression; end with “!”
Middle Lines: Facts
Last Line: Hard-hitting! Summary and recommendation
Focus on leadership, next job, school & promotion (PRF & Enlisted)
No push statement = send me a note

6. A3O Guidance Punctuation:
Do not use double dashes or periods in bullets
Use commas to separate parts of a series
Use semi-colons to separate different thoughts, traits
Use colons and ellipses if appropriate
Abbreviations:
Can abbreviate “combat”
Do not spell out common acronyms, i.e., Ops, DO, Mx, Wg, Gp, Sq
Command use:
CC, CC’s, 4 x CC; do not use cdr, cmdr, cmd
Cmd when referencing the MAJCOM/NAF
