2 A Look at the Author At the age of 14 he decided to be a writer.
Born February 27th in 1902 in Salinas, California. During his childhood, Steinbeck learned to appreciate his surroundings loved the Salinas countryside and the nearby Pacific Ocean Worked during his summers as a hired hand. At the age of 14 he decided to be a writer. : Stanford University.

4 Early Works During the late 1920s and 1930s, he concentrated on writing and wrote several novels set in California 1929: Cup of Gold 1936: Of Mice and Men 1939: The Grapes of Wrath Experience of working among migrant workers.

5 Personal Life 1930: married Carol Henning Divorced in 1942.
1943: married Gwendolyn Conger -Two children -Divorced in 1948 1950: married Elaine Scott

6 Later Life While living in Monterey, California, Steinbeck said that he felt unwelcome. Views on Social Justice Steinbeck left Monterey and moved to New York. December 20, 1968: Died in his apartment in New York City Salinas

11 Why Migrant Workers? Before technology created farm machinery, humans had to do a lot of the farm work Between the 1880s and the 1930s, thousands of men would travel the countryside in search of work. These workers would earn $2.50 or $3.00 a day, plus food and shelter.
