1 Key Instant Recall Facts (K.I.R.F.s)
A Parent’s Guide First of all, yet another big ‘thank you’ to everyone who assisted their children with last term’s KIRFs (aimed at improving your child’s mathematical ability. It is important to stress what an important role these ‘little and often’ revision activities can have in assisting the class teachers, support staff and the children themselves. This terms recall facts are differentiated by year group to give everyone more of a challenge. The topics this term are as follows: Year 3 – time Year 4 – division and multiplication for the seven times table Year 5 – squared numbers and square roots Year 6 – prime numbers and composite numbers As stated previously, we are encouraging children to practise their target sheet for ten minutes each evening.  This could be through multiplying units of time (what is a week times the number of days in June?) or a by parent giving their child a price of a coat with a 20% reduction. Teachers will also continue to provide their class with useful activities which can be practised at home. We hope that your child continues to enjoy the challenge of working their way through the Greenleys KIRF system and that the scheme will have a positive impact on their mathematical ability.

2 Year 3 – Term 4 I can tell the time.
Children need to be able to tell the time using a clock with hands. This target can be broken down into several steps. I can tell the time to the nearest hour. I can tell the time to the nearest half hour. I can tell the time to the nearest quarter hour. I can tell the time to the nearest five minutes. I can tell the time to the nearest minute. Key Vocabulary Twelve o’clock Half past two Quarter past three Quarter to nine Five past one Twenty-five to ten Top Tips The secret to success is practising little and often. Use time wisely. If you would like more ideas, please speak to your child’s teacher. Talk about time - Discuss what time things happen. When does your child wake up? What time do they eat breakfast? Make sure that you have an analogue clock visible in your house or that your child wears a watch with hands. Once your child is confident telling the time, see if you can find more challenging clocks e.g. with Roman numerals or no numbers marked. Ask your child the time regularly – You could also give your child some responsibility for watching the clock : “The cakes need to come out of the oven at twenty-two minutes past four exactly.” “We need to leave the house at twenty-five to nine.”

What is 7 times 8? What is 84 divided by 7? They should be able to answer these questions in any order, including missing number questions e.g. 7 × ⃝ = 28 or ⃝ ÷ 6 = 7. Top Tips The secret to success is practising little and often. Use time wisely. Can you practise these KIRFs while walking to school or during a car journey? You don’t need to practise them all at once: perhaps you could have a fact family of the day. If you would like more ideas, please speak to your child’s teacher. Songs and Chants – You can buy Times Tables CDs or find multiplication songs and chants online. If your child creates their own song, this can make the times tables even more memorable. Order of difficulty – Ask your child to order these facts from the easiest to the most challenging. Can they explain why some facts are easier to remember? Then focus on practising the most challenging facts. Use memory tricks – For those hard-to-remember facts, has some strange picture stories to help children remember.

What is 7 multiplied by itself? What is the square root of 144? Is 81 a square number? Children should also be able to recognise whether a number below 150 is a square number or not. Cycling Squares – At there is a challenge involving square numbers. Can you complete the challenge and then create your own examples? Use memory tricks – For those hard-to-remember facts, has some strange picture stories to help children remember.

Year 6 – Term 4 I can identify prime numbers up to 50. Key Vocabulary prime number composite number factor multiple A prime number is a number with no factors other than itself and one. The following numbers are prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 27, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47 A composite number is divisible by a number other than 1 or itself. The following numbers are composite numbers: 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 42, 44, 45, 46, 48, 49, 50 Children should be able to explain how they know that a number is composite. E.g. 39 is composite because it is a multiple of 3 and 13. Top Tips The secret to success is practising little and often. Use time wisely. Can you practise these KIRFs while walking to school or during a car journey? You don’t need to practise them all at once: perhaps you could have a fact of the day. If you would like more ideas, please speak to your child’s teacher. It’s really important that your child uses mathematical vocabulary accurately. Choose a number between 2 and 50. How many correct statements can your child make about this number using the vocabulary above? Make a set of cards for the numbers from 2 to 50. How quickly can your child sort these into prime and composite numbers? How many even prime numbers can they find? How many odd composite numbers?
