3 Constellation facts a group of stars forming a recognizable pattern that is traditionally named after its apparent form or identified with a mythological figure. Ptolemy listed 48 constellations, and there are 88 modern constellations

4 Ursa Major Contains 21 stars
Know as the Great bear, or the wagon in Chinese cultures Contains the big dipper it is the largest constellation in the sky

5 Ursa Minor Contains 7 Stars Known as the little dipper, or little bear
Contains Polaris, also know as the north star Incredibly important to early navigation

6 Ursa mythology Callisto gave birth to Zeus's son
As punishment, she was transformed into a bear Her son, Arcas, became a hunter Before arcas could kill her, Zeus cast them both into the sky to avoid tragedy

7 Orion One of the most famous and recognizable constellations in the world Orion is located on the celestial equator Has Orion’s belt, which contains 3 bright stars

8 Orion mythology Was a powerful warrior which hunted with artemis
Threatened to kill all beasts on the planet Mother earth sent a scorpion to kill him Zues, honoring the fallen warrior, placed him among the stars

Based on Laelaps, which was a gift from Zeus to Europa

5 stars make up the prominent W shape in this constellation Boasted to much, insulting the gods As punishment, she was forced to circle the celestial pole

12 12 Zodiac signs Greek mythology; contains 12 signs
These are used in astrology to predict the future In astronomy, we use these to find certain stars and can tell the time of the year Each month, one of the 12 constellations appears above the horizon in the east to begin its march across the sky.

14 Taurus (The Bull) Zeus turned himself into a bull when he swam from Phoenicia to Crete.

It was thought to bring good luck to sailors since it appeared at the end of the winter storm season.

The goat, an expert climber, represents the sun's climb from its lowest position in the sky

2 constellations of the Zodiac # of stars, and draw out the constellation itself The names of 3 of the Stars The dates on the calendar it represents 3-4 sentences on the mythology/astrology for each of your 2 zodiac signs A picture of what it represents, or the symbol of the constellation

20 Warm-up 9/20 What are the two kinds of eclipses we talked about?

21 Moon Project Draw the following phases, both waning and waxing, (gibbous, half, new, crescent, quarter moon, 3 quarter moon) Choose a year and a month, and show how the moon changed across that month (can be combined with the first bullet point) Show the position of the moon/sun during a solar eclipse, during a lunar eclipse. Last but not least, have a diagram of how earth tilt effects seasons in the northern hemisphere. Label Spring and fall equinoxes and winter/summer solstices. 70 points for content, 30 for creativity
