1 Transfer Credit Description: The purpose of this module is to acquaint the user with the transferability of credit from an accredited body to the University. This Module will help familiarize the advisor with the process of transferring credit earned at an accredited college/university to one of the University’s degree programs.

2 WBU Mission: University Core Values: Commitment to Student Learning
 Wayland Baptist University exists to educate students in an academically challenging, learning-focused and distinctively Christian environment for professional success and service to God and humankind. University Core Values:  The following core values are at the heart of the degree planning process: Commitment to Student Learning Excellence and Innovation Service to Our Communities Integrity, Diversity, Trust, and Respect Personal, Professional and Spiritual Development Stewardship of Our Resources Planning and Accountability This is a reminder of the WBU Mission and the University’s Core Values. These should be considered with every task performed and every decision made with the university.

3 Learning Outcomes: Upon the completion of this training module, the user will be able to identify, understand, and apply the rules and steps found within the university’s guidelines in order to transfer the appropriate credit gained from an accredited college/university. This module will ensure the proper governance of the university’s programs and ensure that our student population is being advised correctly. After reviewing this module, the advisor should be able speak with a potential student about the likelihood of transferring credit from another college/university. Advisor’s will be able to demonstrate on a degree plan which courses the transferred credit will satisfy and in what order they will be placed onto the degree plan.

4 Governing Policies It is the responsibility of the student to provide official transcripts of all college work completed as of the date of the Application for Admission. Failure to list all colleges attended is considered grounds for denial of admission into Wayland as well as possible immediate suspension for those currently enrolled at Wayland. ACCREDITED U.S. COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES: “Accredited” is defined as regionally or nationally accredited Credit may be transferred from any regionally accredited U.S. College or University. Credit may be accepted from any nationally accredited U.S. College or University that meets Wayland’s catalog policy. Check the date the school was accredited as we can not accept credit for courses if the school was not accredited during the time the person took classes. In evaluating nationally accredited transcripts, we will uphold the catalog’s policy on transfer credit as stated: “The University will consider for transfer collegiate-level work completed at an institution of higher education. To be acceptable for transfer, the work must be of comparable level and content with the degree being sought at Wayland. In no instance will remedial, high school, or duplicate work be accepted in transfer. Acceptability of work for transfer does not imply that it is applicable toward the requirements of a particular degree program.” The responsibility lies upon the student to ensure that official documents are provided to the University for review. Advisor’s should be cautious in advising students about transferring in credit without the official documents in hand. Due to various programs, states, and issuing agencies there are too many variables to counsel a student correctly until the advisor can review the documents. Once the documents are received, it will be easier for the advisor to work with an evaluator (if needed) to assess the ability to transfer credit. If a particular course is not listed in the University’s evaluated list, advisors must work with an evaluator to evaluate the transferability of a course.

5 Governing Policies Cont.
Wayland Baptist University will only consider credit from schools accredited by accreditors recognized or approved by the Department of Education (DOE) for transfer into our degree programs. The web address is “The university’s transcript evaluators are responsible for the evaluation of transfer credit. For courses not previously assessed, a syllabus or course outcomes may be required and reviewed by the Dean of the School of the discipline for which that course would be considered equivalent to Wayland work.” The following is a list of the “recognized regional accrediting commissions” (and the abbreviations used) EH – New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (NEASC-CIHE) EV – New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Technical and Career Institutions (NEASC-CTCI) M – Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Higher Education (MSA/CHE) NH – North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission (NCA) NW – Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Colleges (NASC) SC – Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACS) WC – Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities (WASC-Sr) WJ – Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (WASC-ACCJC) If a course has not been transferred into the University previously, it may be required to be reviewed and approved by the Dean of the School of the discipline in question. Advisor’s should be cautious when speaking with a potential or existing student about the likelihood of transferability. In some cases, it will be the burden of the student to provide the University a syllabus or outline of the course. The list of abbreviated regionally accrediting commissions is not an exhaustive list. For a complete list of accrediting agencies, contact the BAS/BCM office.

6 Governing Policies Cont.
UNACCREDITED U.S. COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES: Credit will not be accepted from unaccredited U.S. Colleges and Universities. TRANSFER OF “D” GRADES: A total of six hours of “Ds” will be accepted in transfer. Beginning with the Catalog, Grades of “D” will not be accepted for transfer into a student’s major, minor, or specialization. No courses with a grade of “D” will be accepted from an institution at which the student has a GPA of less than 2.0. GPA for each institution is figured separately. No “Ds” will be accepted in any English course in General Education regardless of the student’s GPA. No grades of “D” will be accepted in correspondence work. Under no circumstance will transfer credit be accepted from an unaccredited US college/university. Transfer credit will also not be accepted if it is deemed to be remedial. Advisor’s should pay close attention to the transcript received by a potential student. If an advisor sees a student who has a low GPA and desires to transfer in more than six hours of “D” credit, advisors need to caution the student that it is not possible. In some circumstances, the student will have too low of GPA to be admitted into the University. Advisors should advise cautiously until it is determined that the student will be admitted into the University.

7 Governing Policies Cont.
FOREIGN COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES: All foreign college and/or university transcripts must be evaluated by an outside evaluation agency. Students who submit foreign transcripts must send their transcripts to outside evaluators at their own expense, with the understanding that we will respond to the outside evaluation in the same manner as we do to any transcript. WBU prefers students use World Education Services in New York. World Education Services, Inc. P.O. Box Bowling Green Station New York, NY  Phone:  (212) Fax:  (212)   For Phillipine & Canadian Bible Colleges, refer to BAS/BCM handbook. PUERTO RICO & MEXICAN TRANSCRIPTS: Puerto Rico and Mexican schools which are accredited by SACS are acceptable, and the courses given credit for credit. If the transcript is in any other language than English, the transcript must be evaluated by an outside foreign transcript evaluation institution. Transcripts which are labeled “Colegio” will not be accepted for credit. This is high school level work. For a complete list of outside evaluators, please refer to the BAS/BCM handbook. All foreign transcripts need to be evaluated by an outside source. The University would prefer students to use the World Education Services company, however, there are multiple agencies that a student can use. For a complete list of these agencies, refer to the BAS/BCM handbook.

8 Governing Policies Cont.
CORRESPONDENCE WORK: (none offered by Wayland) Only 12 semester hours of correspondence can be accepted from other regionally or nationally accredited colleges. A minimum grade of “C” is required. No credit will be allowed for a correspondence course in which an “F” or “WF” has been made in a residence course. No credit will be allowed for a correspondence course in English in which a “D” has been made in a residence course. No credit will be accepted from unaccredited correspondence schools. We do not accept credit from schools whose only accreditation is by the National Home Study Council. NO REMEDIAL CLASSES WILL BE ACCEPTED IN TRANSFER: Other institutions may transcribe a course as non-remedial; however, all courses must meet the standards set by Wayland Baptist University’s catalog. Courses may be assessed as remedial based on the course components. Example: Courses from other institutions titled Intermediate Algebra that do not meet the standards of WBU’s MATH 1300 will be counted as remedial. The same transfer rules apply to correspondence work, (i.e. it must be from an accredited school, no class in which a “F” is achieved will be transferred, etc.) Additional rules that apply to correspondence work include, a maximum of 12 semester hours may be transferred and all work must have been graded at a “C” or better. Even if a course is not deemed as being remedial by the offering institution, Wayland has the right to assess each course based on its own standards set by the University catalog, which means that the University may assess the course as remedial based on the course components.

9 Governing Policies Cont.
AIR UNIVERSITY/EXTENSION COURSE INSTITUTE: Even though the Extension Course Institute is accredited by the National Home Study Council, we have an agreement with the Air Force to accept their credit as listed in the ACE Guide. Credit is listed by course number in the back of the Air Force guide, and is cross- referenced to the corresponding course.  CCAF: As of August 19, 2002 a maximum of 60 semester hours will be accepted in transfer from CCAF transcripts. Beginning August 1, 2004, a maximum of 48 semester hours will be accepted in transfer from CCAF transcripts. Beginning August 1, 2007 a maximum of 49 semester hours will be accepted in transfer from CCAF transcripts. Pending Academic Council Meeting. Beginning August 20, 2008 the limit for CCAF hours no longer applies. A student must meet the Non-Junior requirements of the degree. Credit issued by the Air Force is accepted as listed in the ACE Guide. The maximum number of transferrable CCAF hours is now unlimited. However, students must still meet the Non-Junior requirement of the degree plan. Advisors need to ensure that students are aware of the Non-Junior requirement and explain in detail the difference between junior hours and non-junior hours. Many military members will find that there is no need to transfer in their full CCAF due to the restrictions of the non-junior hour requirement.

10 Common Mistakes: Transferring in Lower Level credit hours and not adjusting the number of required Upper Level credit hours. Transferring in courses from another institution that have not been approved through the University’s courses evaluated or by the evaluator. Allowing students to take duplicate courses. Be very cautious registering students for courses without their official transcript/certificate in hand. Many students take the incorrect course in their first term of enrollment. Advisor’s granting credit from colleges/universities that are not accredited. Allowing for too many transfer credits, i.e. 31 residency hours are required, 52 non-junior hours are required. This is a list of some common mistakes made by the advisor and the student.

11 Summary Review:  This training module focused on the transfer of credit from an accredited college/university. At its conclusion, the advisor should know the specific rules requiring proof of accreditation, how to handle foreign transcripts, the process of evaluation, and the specific guidelines concerning correspondence and CCAF credit. Advisors should be able to explain the process of transferring in credit to interested students and counsel them appropriately based upon the University’s governance.
