1 Physics Section 11.1 Apply harmonic motion
An object that follows a repeated path in equal intervals of time exhibits periodic motion.

2 Simple harmonic motion is a (periodic motion) vibration about an equilibrium position in which the force and the acceleration are directed toward the equilibrium and are proportional to the displacement from the equilibrium.

3 Hooke’s Law F = -kx F = spring force (N) K = force constant (N/m)
x = displacement (m)

4 example A mass of .35 kg is attached to a vertical spring causing it to stretch 14 cm. What is the force constant of the spring?

5 example A spring has a force constant of 75 N/m. What force will cause it to stretch the spring .40 m?

6 A pendulum exhibits harmonic motion if the angle of rotation remains small.
In harmonic motion, the sum of the potential and kinetic energies is constant.
