4 What are the ways that an interest group can influence lawmakers
What are the ways that an interest group can influence lawmakers? What does it mean for the impact of regular people on the gov’t?

5 Key Term Interest Group
An organization with one goal that organizes to influence lawmakers.

6 How Do Interest Groups Influence Lawmakers?
Endorse lawmakers running for election Donate money to a lawmaker’s campaign Meet with lawmakers to discuss issues

7 Positive Aspects of Interest Groups
Interest groups help society by providing lawmakers with valuable information on laws that should be passed. Since lawmakers have to worry about many different issues, interest groups give them the details they need to know to vote the best way. I may know about helping Baltimore, but I don’t know as much about the impact of drilling for oil in Alaska. So, I’ll call my mans at the Sierra Club to fill me in.

8 Positive Aspects of Interest Groups
They also allow citizens to voice their support for a specific cause. Citizens can donate money to these groups to directly impact causes they care about.

9 Negative Aspects of Interest Groups
Interest groups play a huge role in political elections. They give money to candidates who promise to pass laws for them

10 Negative Aspects of Interest Groups
Politicians listen more to interest groups than their constituents since these groups provide so much money. The average citizen does not have as much influence over their lawmakers.

11 In 2011, Democratic Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot in the head at an event in her hometown.

12 The Blame Game… Gun Control Clip

13 The National Rifle Association expressed its concern about the attack, but immediately blamed the attacker, saying that he was mentally unstable. In their view, it was not the gun that killed people, it was the person holding it. Many citizens called for stricter gun laws, but the politicians who received money from the NRA did not pass any.

14 Negative Aspects of Interest Groups
Politicians who side with interest groups have a lot more money for elections, so they tend to beat those who do not have wealthy donors. Some feel this means only wealthy people can win elections.

15 Campaign Finance Interest groups make sure that new campaign finance laws, laws that would limit the amount of money given to candidates, are not passed so that they can keep giving money to politicians.

16 Political Action Committees
In order to give as much money as they want, interest groups also set up Political Action Committees Organizations that collect money and spend it to get preferred candidates elected

17 Lobbyists go through a Revolving Door Cycle
