CULTURE: America’s first melting pot HISTORY: Spanish and French possession before Louisiana Purchase, Civil War, Prohibition, Civil Rights Movement, Hurricane Katrina CONTRAST: a domestic destination very different from New York ECOLOGY: a very different landscape, climate, and environment than the northeast
