18 Seek & Destroy spelling errors
To build up children’s spelling confidence they are now identifying and correcting their own mistakes. Information on Seek and Destroy We are now expecting the children to identify their own mistakes. We have called this Seek and Destroy. In the past when we have corrected work, we have often written out the correct spelling for the children. They have then had to write out the corrected spelling. The onus is now for the children to seek out their mistakes making them more responsible for correcting them. Enabling it to be more meaningful and worthwhile to them. This new initiative will help the children build up their spelling confidence. Key Words are non-negotiable. The expectation is to spell these words, and words displayed in the classroom correctly all the time. Increased independence with spelling should become evident. The next step in years 3 and 4 will be to use a dot in the margin opposed to a key. In years 5 and 6 a dot in the margin will be used to indicate a spelling error in the paragraph.

19 Spelling mistakes will be indicated with Sp or a either in the margin or at the end of the paragraph. Children then need to find and correct these, using a dictionary as necessary.

20 Non-negotiables Key Words are non-negotiable. The expectation is to spell these words, and words displayed in the classroom correctly all the time.
