3. Background on the Fire Reichstag Building on Fire!
February 27, 1933 the Reichstag (German Parliament) Building caught fire.
When police arrived they found 24-year-old Marinus van der Lubbe on the grounds.
Gestapo arrested him and then tortured him until he confessed to starting the fire.
He did denied that he was part of a Communist conspiracy.
Hermann Goering refused to believe him and ordered the arrest of several leaders of the German Communist Party (KPD).

4. Background on the Fire Continued
After Adolf Hitler heard the news about the fire he gave orders that all leaders of the German Communist Party “be hanged that very night.”
President Paul von Hindenburg vetoed this decision but did agree that Hitler should take “dictatorial powers”.
KPD candidates were arrested and Goering announced that the Nazi Party planned “to exterminate” German communists.
German Police charged van der Lubbe and four communists (including Ernst Torgler, the chairman of the KPD and Georgi Dimitrov of the Soviet Comintern) of setting the fire.

5. Background on the Fire Continued
March 23, 1933, German Reichstag (Parliament) passed the Enabling Bill.
It banned the KPD and the Social Democratic Party from taking part in future election campaigns, making the Nazi Party the only legal political party in Germany.
Nazi officials then began put in charge of all local government.
Trades unions being abolished, their funds taken and their leaders put in prison.
van der Lubbe was found guilty of the fire and was executed on January 10, 1934.

January 30, 1933: President von Hindenburg appoints Hitler Chancellor.
February 27, 1933: German Parliament, Reichstag Building , Burns Down.
February 28, 1933: President Hindenburg and Chancellor Hitler invoke Article 48 of the Constitution.
March 5, 1933: Goering declares that there is no further need for state governments.
March 24, 1933: Parliament passes the Enabling Law , granting Hitler dictatorial power.

Reichstag Fire helped the Nazi party.
It allowed them to use propaganda to rally the public to blame the communists.
Successfully defeated all other political parties.
Allow Hitler to become Dictator, gaining more power, because of laws put in place because of the fire.
