11 Beginning of 3rd Journey
Began around 54 A.D. Claudius had just died Nero now Emperor Will eventually have Paul and many others executed Began from Antioch of Syria Traveled through Galatia and Phrygia Over to Ephesus were he stayed for three years Likely wrote Galatians early in his stay Wrote 1 Corinthians late in his stay 11 11

12 Third Journey Acts 18:23-31 Apollos at Ephesus
23 After he had spent some time there, he departed and went over the region of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples. 24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John.  12 12

13 Third Journey Acts 18:23-31 Apollos at Ephesus
26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; 28 for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ. 13 13

14 Third Journey Acts 18:23-31 Apollos at Ephesus A Jew from Egypt
Was taught by a disciple of John An eloquent man Fervent, bold and well versed in scriptures A teacher going about teaching and sharing his faith Problem: He only knew of John’s baptism Priscilla and Aquila taught him Apollos goes to Achaia (Corinth) to teach 14 14

15 Third Journey Acts 19:1-9 Paul at Ephesus
1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."  15 15

16 Third Journey Acts 19:1-9 Paul at Ephesus
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all. 8 And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God. 9 But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 6/5/2011 16 16

17 Third Journey Acts 19:1-9 Paul at Ephesus
John’s baptism was ‘unto repentance’ just as was the baptism begun on the day of Pentecost. However, John’s baptism was only directed toward Jews. It was fundamentally different from ‘in Jesus’ name.’ Jesus’ disciples’ were baptizing in the same way as John while Jesus was alive (Jn 4:1-2) Faith in Him as the Christ was not required because His work had not even begun when John began teaching and baptizing 6/5/2011 17 17

18 Third Journey Acts 19:1-9 Paul at Ephesus
The great commission, however, was by Jesus’ authority, it was in His name. It required faith in Him and it placed men in a covenant relationship with Him. John’s baptism was limited in time and purpose. John’s purpose was to prepare for the Christ. John’s baptism was to prepare for the Christ. Jesus’ baptism required belief in Him as the Divine Son of God. 6/5/2011 18 18

19 Third Journey Acts 19:1-9 Holy Spirit question
“We have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit” When did these men receive the Holy Spirit? After they were baptized? After they Paul had laid hands on them. This was the same way the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:15-18) 6/5/2011 19 19

20 Third Journey Acts 19:1-9 Church in Ephesus
The brethren split away from the Jews in the synagogue when they became hardened and disobedient (after 3 months). Began meeting in a school (Tyrannus) He continued here for 2 years. 6/5/2011 20 20
