1 Medication used to treat both infection and Neuropathic Pain
The Diabetic Foot Medication used to treat both infection and Neuropathic Pain

2 What is a Diabetic Foot The objectives of today…
What are the risks to the foot in a person with diabetes? Why do we have to be so vigilant of feet in diabetes? Why are some people on long term Anti-Biotics? Why do some people have such bad pain and some not feel anything?

3 Causes of a Diabetic Foot Ulcer?
Pressure- Any point on the foot where pressure is applied- from shoes, socks Ischemia- Peripheral Vascular disease causing bad blood supply Trauma- Standing on an object, stubbing toe, blister

8 Long term Antibiotics Wound Infection
How does high blood glucose levels/bad controlled diabetes contribute towards wound infection? * The wound itself may be infected which is established by taking a swab- the swab will identify the antibiotic it is sensitive to * You may have heard of some of them- Amoxicillin, Flucloxicillin, Trimethroprim, Co-Amoxiclav, Doxycycline, Metronidazole * These need to be taken as per the instructions to ensure they work. Anti- biotics are usually taken several times a day (These are sometimes used for other infections in the body- ie.. Trimethroprim- Urinary tract infections)

9 Long term anti-biotics cont…
Bone infection * Bone infection is called what? O_____________ How do we find out there is infection in the bone? What can bone infection lead too? Why do we take the anti-biotics for so long? The anti-biotics have to be able to penetrate the bone to eradicate the infection- Some examples of antiobiocs used in osteomyelitis- Co- Amoxiclav, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin

10 Medications used in Neuropathic Pain
Standard medications usually used for pain relief , (i.e Paracetamol) do not work on Neuropathic Pain because the pain is caused by the nerve endings dying/being over active due to the bad controlled diabetes Most of the medications used to treat Neuropathic Pain are primarily prescribed for other health conditions… For example- You may have heard of some of these- Pregabalin- Anti-epileptic, Amitriptiline- Anti-depressant Most will be on some kind of opioid based medication like morphine/tramadol as well
