3 SAFETY Anesthetic Gas effect on humans (VERY high exposure)
Abortion, genetic defects, cancer, organ failure Protect yourself: Up to date system Take all precautions

4 Anesthesia… Common side effects: Depress breathing Bradycardia
Hypothermia Urination and defecation Susceptible to seizures

5 Mechanisms of Anesthesia..
Oxygen + anesthetic into rebreathing bag Animal breathes in via rebreathing bag Capillaries exchange Oxygen and anesthetic into bloodstream Anesthetic reaches the brain

6 A normal anesthetic event
Preanesthetic Anesthetic Induction of anesthesia Intubation Maintenance Extubation Recovery

7 Recovery Normal excitement phase Keep quiet and safe
Monitor TPR, attitude Keep warm Monitor any surgical incisions

8 Preparation: Endotracheal tube: What is it?? What does it do??
Check for: Correct size Check cuff

9 Rebreathing Tubes What are they? What is their function? Choose: size
Non-rebreathing set up

10 Other options… Anesthesia Mask Induction Chamber

11 Rebreathing Bag Reservoir of anesthetic gas and oxygen
Need to choose correct size based on weight or ideal weight of patient

12 Laryngoscope What is it? What is it’s purpose?
Check for: size, lightbulb, function

13 Vaporizer What is it? What does it do? Preparation: fill it

14 Sodasorb Absorbs excess Carbon Dioxide
When granules are full, they turn blue Change at least once a month

15 Oxygen Supply Anesthesia travels via Oxygen
Flowmeter determines amount of oxygen flowing into system Check tank every time you use machine SAFETY TIP: Always turn OFF the Oxygen when you are finished

16 Scavenge System What does it do? OSHA requirements
F/AIR vs Scavenge system

17 Other necessities… Gauze tie Heated table/ heating pad Eye lube
Syringe for cuff of ET tube

18 YOUR JOB….. BE PREPARED!! Monitor animal Adjust anesthesia
Give breaths Recover patient
