“I Am the Resurrection and the Life”

The Setting (John 11:1-24) Scene #1: Jesus’ friend is sick in Bethany (11:1-3) Scene #2: Jesus receives word that Lazarus was deathly sick (11:3-16) Jesus loved Lazarus, Martha and Mary (11:3, 5) Jesus was in Perea beyond the Jordan (10:40-42) Jesus said the sickness was “for the glory of God” (11:4) Jesus waited two days before going to Bethany (11:5-7) The disciples were hesitant to return to Judea (11:7-10) Jesus knew that Lazarus was dead (11:11-14) Jesus knew what He was going to do (11:15)

The Setting (John 11:1-24) Scene #3: Jesus meets Martha outside of Bethany (11:17-27) There was still mourning going on at the home (11:17-19) Martha went out to meet Jesus (11:20-24) Scene #4: Jesus meets Mary outside of Bethany (11:28-37) Scene #5: Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead (11:39-44)

The Saying (John 11:25-27) The parallel statements are quite remarkable: “I am the resurrection – He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” “I am the life – Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” The Resurrection was not a brand new concept Belief in the resurrection and eternal life expressed in O.T. The resurrection was debated by the Pharisees & Sadducees Jesus stated He had the power to bring the dead to life He had raised Jairus’ daughter (Luke 8:40-42, 49-56) He had raised the widow of Nain’s son (Luke 7:11-17) He was trying to tell Martha He could/would raise Lazarus

The Saying (John 11:25-27) Jesus is the origin, cause and power of the resurrection and life Jesus is the source (giver) of all life (John 1:4; 5:26) Physical life (Gen. 1:26; John 1:3-4; Col. 1:16) Spiritual life (John 10:10; Eph. 2:1; 1 John 5:11; Col. 3:4; Rom. 6:3-4) Eternal life (John 6:33; 10:28; Rev. 1:18) Jesus is the source of the resurrection (1 Cor. 15:20-22, 50-54; Phil. 3:20-21; 1 Thess. 4:16) The resurrection past – Christ arose from the dead (1 Cor. 15:3, 20-23) The resurrection present – sinners rise to a new life (Rom. 6:3-4) The resurrection future – our bodies come forth (John 5:28-29) Jesus promises that faithful Christians “shall never die”!

The Significance “Do you believe this?” (11:26-27)
The one who believes in Christ (and obeys Him) has eternal life that transcends physical death Though the physical body will die, YOU will never die! The one who believes in Christ is promised that he will be raised from the dead, as Christ was (1 Thess. 4:16-17) Death for the faithful is not the “end of life” but the “beginning of true life” (John 1:4; Phil. 1:21-24; Col. 1:16-17; 2 Cor. 5:1-11) To escape eternal death, you must respond as Martha did! As a faithful Christian, you have nothing to fear in death, because of Jesus—the resurrection and the life!
