4 AS PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION AND RELIGIOUS ETHICS
Components: 1. Philosophy of Religion and Religious Ethics 2. Study of Religion: Christianity 3. Dialogues This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the 2 year course.

5 PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION
SECTION A: Philosophy of Religion studies the general philosophies about religion and God: Arguments for the existence of God Evil and suffering Religious experience Religious language Miracles Self and life after death Two compulsory two-part questions, each worth 10 and 15 marks

6 ETHICS AND RELIGION SECTION B: Ethics and religion studies ethical theories of philosophers and then applies these theories to practical moral issues: Ethical theories- Natural Moral Law, Situation Ethics and Virtue Ethics Issues of human life and death. Issues of animal life and death. Introduction to Meta ethics. Free will and moral responsibility. Conscience. Bentham and Kant Two compulsory two-part questions, each worth 10 and 15 marks Written exam: 3 hours 100 marks 50% of A-level

7 2: STUDY OF RELIGION AND DIALOGUES: CHRISTIANITY
SECTON A: The Study of Religion looks at different aspects of a chosen religion, in your case Christianity, and studies the different ways in which these are expressed in the lives of individuals, communities and societies. Sources of wisdom and authority God/gods/ultimate reality Self, death and the afterlife Good conduct and key moral principles Expression of religious identity Religion, gender and sexuality Religion and science Religion and secularisation Religion and religious pluralism Two compulsory two-part questions, each worth 10 and 15 marks Questions may span more than one topic.

8 SECTION B: The dialogue between Christianity and philosophy studies the influence of religion on philosophy, and how far philosophy has influenced religion, in relation to the issues studied. For example, how far is belief in God and the afterlife reasonable? How coherent are Christian beliefs, and how consistent are they with other beliefs in the belief system? Two unstructured synoptic questions will be set. Students must answer one. It is worth 25 marks.

9 SECTION C: The dialogue between Christianity and ethics studies the impact of ethical perspectives and ethical studies on Christian views in both the past and present, in relation to the issues studied. For example, how far have they challenged and supported Christian views on the issues of human and animal life and death? Two unstructured synoptic questions will be set. Students must answer one. It is worth 25 marks. Written exam: 3 hours 100 marks 50% of A-level Two compulsory two-part questions, each worth 10 and 15 marks

10 Why choose Philosophy and Ethics?
Philosophy and Ethics is a highly respected A Level amongst universities and employers because of the breadth of learning and the diversity of skills.  Philosophy and Ethics will equip students with skills for careers involving problem solving, communication and presentation. It is an excellent subject to choose if students are thinking about law, education, medicine or social work. It also works well with Humanities, Science and Business degrees.

11 What are the aims? The aims of the course are to study core philosophical, theological and ethical theories and learn to evaluate them critically. An understanding of these ideas is essential to an informed and nuanced engagement with key themes in politics, law, medicine, education, human rights and religion.

12 Student Profile The subject is suitable for anyone who enjoys thinking critically, playing with abstract concepts and challenging received wisdom. Prior study of Religious Studies is of benefit though not essential.

13 Other Subject Combinations
Philosophy and Ethics is compatible with a wide range of subjects. It works particularly well with English and the Humanities but also complements the Sciences, Mathematics and Classics.

14 Potential Degree Courses and Career Choices
An A Level in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics is highly regarded by universities and is excellent preparation for degrees in: Philosophy Theology Religious Studies PPE Sociology Law Graduates in these subjects may go on to careers in Law, the Civil Service, Foreign Office and Teaching. The Ethical theories studied in this A Level are also highly relevant to degrees in Medicine, Science and Business.
