6 Critical Dates

7 Commissioning PDR (ComPDR)
Mid to late January 2017 – CD-2 like in scope Set new baseline of the integrated NSF + DOE commissioning plan: - Schedule + Budget + Staffing Profiles w/BOEs - Includes “pre-Commissioning” development and preparation effort Subsystem AI&T pathways into commissioning Demonstrate feasibility and tool prototypes

8 Critical Dates 11 weeks January 21, 2017 Commissioning PDR
December 15, ComPDR Director’s Review November 17, CCB Meeting to approve new baseline November 7, New baseline & Change Request complete October 31, Commissioning activity schedule complete September 15, Updated commissioning design w/DM integration and site specific plans August 31, Basic NSF + DOE re-plan established 11 weeks

9 Scope & Definitions of the Commissioning Plan

10 Commissioning Scope The LSST Commissioning Plan covers the final system level assembly, integration and testing (AI&T) of the three primary subsystems – Telescope, Camera and Data Management – plus the infrastructure supporting EPO and Headquarters operations into the LSST Observatory System. Commissioning includes DOE “early operations” funded (non-MIE) activities.

11 Commissioning Scope The Commissioning Plan is derived from the following inputs: System level verification plan per LSE-160, including the SysML based verification event sequences and logic; Subsystem assembly, integration and test plans (T&S: LTS-104; Camera: LCA- 40; DM: ???) with subsystem requirements identified that can only be verified once commissioning starts; Scientifically motivated system performance characterization; and Technical optimization of system operations.

12 Commissioning Definitions
A useful guiding principle for commissioning boundary definition follows: An activity is considered part of commissioning when it involves a “delivered” component from one of the subsystem “touching” that of one of the other subsystems.

13 Commissioning Definitions
Commissioning activities involving Data Management starts when components receive “real data” from one of the principal sources, including the Auxiliary telescope/instrument, ComCam or the full Science Camera. First calibration data from Auxiliary Telescope: August 2018 First on-sky and calibration images with ComCam: September 2019 Sustained observing with ComCam: February 2020 Images from Camera re-verification at Summit Facility: June 2020 First on-sky and calibration data from Camera+Telescope: October 2020 Sustained scheduler driven observing with Camera+Telescope: January 2021 Start Science Verification mini-Surveys: April 2021

14 Commissioning Definitions
Commissioning activities involving the Camera begins with shipping from SLAC to Chile and re-verification on the Cerro Pachon summit. Re- verification activities of the Camera will be led by DOE personnel, but coordinated through the Commissioning team and plan. These activities are currently scheduled to start February 14, 2020 with a Camera Pre-Ship Acceptance review at SLAC.

15 Commissioning Definitions
Significant commissioning activities involving the Telescope & Site starts with the arrival of ComCam in Chile leading to the beginning of Phase 1, Early System AI&T. These activities are currently scheduled to start April, when ComCam is delivered to the Summit Facility. Note: The auxiliary telescope is scheduled to begin observations in August 2018.

16 Commissioning Phases Pre-Commissioning - Test procedure definition - Test analysis script development using the LSST code base - Procedure & script validation with simulation tools - Special hardware/software development Phase1: Early System AI&T with ComCam - early interface testing - telescope alignment and AOS control - subscale DM pipeline testing Phase II: Full System AI&T with Science Camera - camera-telescope integration, alignment & AOS control - full scale DM pipeline testing Phase III: Science Verification - Operations readiness with mini-Surveys and Data Releases

17 Plan Status: Phase I A single raft camera operating as a surrogate of the full science camera. Utilizes as many Camera system interfaces as possible: CCS-OCS: Command/Control SDS-DM: Image data delivery WDS-TCS: Wavefront sensing GDS-TCS: Guiding Early Camera refrigeration testing Early interface testing and optical alignment with active optics control Early testing of science pipelines Conceptual layout of ComCam with Camera surrogate mass integrated to rotator interface and telescope integrating structure. Detailed design now underway.

18 Full scale science processing and algorithm testing
Plan Status: Phase II Camera integration, calibration and full field optical alignment with AOS control Scheduler testing & optimization Full scale science processing and algorithm testing Data Management integration focus includes: Instrument signature removal calibration and verification Full scale calibration products production Full scale Level 1 alert production testing Camera-Telescope integration focus includes: Physical installation and basic functional checkout Final calibration and verification of active optics look-up tables and optical feedback Integrated system requirements verification (OSS) OCS sequencing & functional interactions with scheduler driven observing

19 Full scale science pipeline processing
Plan Status: Phase III Science verification focuses on characterizing the survey data performance properties defined in the LSR/SRD. Verification matrix filled in with compliance and characterization data. ORR mini-Surveys Full scale science pipeline processing Example sky coverage from a 30-day mini-Survey with a mean visit density of 6 visits per unit area.

20 Work Plan for getting to ComPDR

21 Elements of the re-plan
Clearly defined management structure and lines of responsibilities/authority An integrated (DOE+NSF) commissioning activity schedule resource loaded by location and skill category (individuals identified where possible).  This schedule will also include early preparatory work. The Commissioning planning structure will be updated to include: Data Management components - infrastructure, services and payloads (pipelines and databases) Education and Public Outreach deliverables – data center and services Location specific activities for main LSST facilities Budget and staffing profile supported by DOE Early Operations Funding

22 Elements of the re-plan
Re-baseline MREFC plan to include early preparatory work Requirements for additional tools (hardware and software) needed by the Commissioning plan Update required pre-conditions for each subsystem prior to entering commissioning
