The “Why?” Education Code Section 87100(a)(3): “A work force that is continually responsive to the needs of a diverse student population [which] may be achieved by ensuring that all persons receive an equal opportunity to compete for employment and promotion within the community college districts and by eliminating barriers to equal employment opportunity.”

Pre-hiring EEO Plan Development Administrative Procedures Your EEO Plan creates the blueprint for the culture and activities that will ensure you’re hiring faculty that can be most responsive to the needs of our students. Admin Procedures will lay out the steps of your hiring processes that you will follow so as to ensure consistency and adherence to your college’s goals and missions through the hiring process. 5 Hiring Season Intentional and deliberate processes and communications through every phase and aspect of the “hiring season” will ensure faculty and human resources staff are on the same page and working together to actualize the best hiring experience for everyone involved, especially the candidates. You can think of the way the job description is drafted, where the announcements are posted, the way the interview is conducted as a mini-orientation to the college for the candidates.

7 Job Description The job your college is announcing now is not the same as the job you announced in the past even if the discipline is the same. Consider the new information you have about your college in the time between now and the last time you hired for that discipline, even if it was last year. You now have new program review data, college initiatives, education master plans, etc.

8 You can only catch fish from the pond in which you cast your line.
Job Posting You can only catch fish from the pond in which you cast your line. Consultation with faculty who know different professional organizations and different caucuses within those organizations will help ensure that the college casts as wide a net as possible to attract the best candidates possible.

9 Min Quals and Equivalencies
Some candidates’ degrees don’t easily translate to the disciplines for which we are hiring. Successful hiring depends greatly on how well faculty work with HR staff to establish processes for reviewing applications for minimum qualifications and equivalency requests in a manner that doesn’t burden either party and ensures great candidates aren’t lost before they’re afforded a proper screening.

10 Screening Committee Our procedures outlining how we select faculty to serve on screening committees and the rigor and frequency of the EEO training of faculty on screening committees expresses our resolve to build a teaching and learning environment responsive to our students’ needs.

11 Interview Questions Questions reflecting our expectations that our faculty are advocates for meaningful and engaging learning experiences for students help to ensure candidates best capable and most willing to be responsive to our students will rise to the top of the pool of candidates.

12 Interview Protocol and Scheduling
Keeping the goal of a workforce responsive to our diverse student needs should drive our decisions about the manner in which we conduct and the ways we schedule the interviews.

13 Post-hiring The EEO Plan and Administrative Procedures are living documents to be informed by how they work in practice. What’s been learned through the hiring process should inform the revisions/amendments to those documents.
