AP Night AP Physics 1 & 2 Mr. Phillip Lanman

2 Welcome to AP Physics 1

3 What I’ve Done… Graduated High School in Va Beach Grades 6-12 in Va Schools Wrestled HS and 1 Yr College USAFA Pilot-KC-135A/R and B-1B 30 yrs in the AF as a pilot/diplomat Last of 5 college age children will graduate this weekend!

4 Where I’ve Lived… Pilot training in Mississippi Lived in CA, KS, ND, SD, NE, ID, VA, China, VA VA—Alexandria, Woodbridge, Va Beach, Lynchburg

5 Adult Child

6 Cambodia Qatar Bahrain Oman Near the North Pole

7 Great to Have You—Hope You Enjoy a Challenge
Math—important you have good math skills Best if you have had pre-calculus—you can make it without it but it makes some of the Newtonian stuff difficult to manage Reasonable homework but still have homework Test Corrections NMSI Curve Quizzes and Tests in every block

8 The AP Program… Enables students to pursue college level studies
Is modeled on a comparable college course Ensures college/university level faculty play a key role content Provides an end of course, college level assessment (AP Physics Exam) Is a gateway to success in college

9 AP Physics 1—The Course…
Kinematics—how things move on surfaces and in the air Dynamics—Newton’s Laws—how forces and masses interact Circular Motion and the Universal Law of Gravitation Simple Harmonic Motion (Pendulums and Springs) Impulse, linear momentum and conservation of linear momentum Work, Energy and conservation of energy Rotational motion: torque, rotational kinematics and energy, rotational dynamics and conservation of angular momentum Electrostatics—electric charge and force DC Circuits (resistors only in series and parallel) Waves and sound

10 AP Physics 2—The Course…
Fluid Mechanics—buoyancy, fluid flow, pressure in fluids Thermodynamics—Laws of Thermodynamics, PV=nRT, graphing, heat engines, entropy Optics—geometric and wave nature of light Electricity and Magnetism—Static charges and fields, electric potential, currents, DC circuits with capacitors, magnetism and induction Modern Physics—Quantum, atomic and nuclear physics

11 Labs… Based on AP College Board Written INQUIRY Labs

12 Expectations… Read Textbook Assignments—Giancoli Seventh Edition
On Line Homework—Mastering Physics Problems and worksheets from the Textbook In Class Lecture In Class Supervised Problem Solving Practice Problems from AP Multiple Choice and Free Response Guarantee My Best Effort—fourth year teaching AP Physics 1, second year teaching AP Physics 2
