40 Keys to Success - APPs This relationship is unique among other multidisciplinary ICU providers. Our ICU APP group are faculty in the School of Medicine and have tremendous medical knowledge, expertise, and experience in critical care medicine. They will be a great resource for you during your ICU rotations and you will no doubt learn much from our talented group. A successful collaborative relationship is not only expected, but also vital to your education as a critical care fellow. Our APP group will formally evaluate your performance on the ICU rotation and also serve as members of our fellowship Clinical Competence Committee. Our goal is to concentrate on teamwork and partnership and to avoid discussions of hierarchy. Patient care is always our highest priority. As per ACGME fellowship guidelines and goals of training, you will transition to graduated autonomy and leadership of the entire multidisciplinary ICU team. Your relationship with our ICU APP group will similarly transition over the course of the fellowship. The entire APP team is committed to your education and excited for the opportunity to participate in your education. In the STICU, our ICU APPs follow patients primarily. As the fellow on service, they will communicate with you on admissions, daily care plans, updates on status, and planned interventions. This will include bedside discussion and primary phone calls from our APPs during scheduled call. As above, your communications should be collaborative. In almost all cases, there will likely be agreement on plans of care. In cases of disagreement, constructive discussions are valued, and ultimate authority lies with the faculty attending intensivist. Finally, all STICU providers (fellows, APPs, residents) can contact the attending intensivist directly when necessary to communicate critical patient care concerns.
