5 CH-1 Introduction to Mechanics What is mechanics? Physical science deals with the state of rest or motion of bodies under the action of force 5 Why we study mechanics? This science form the ground work for further study in the design and analysis of structures

7 Fundamental Concepts : Statics: Science which deals with the equilibrium of a body at rest or moving with constant velocity. Dynamics: Science which deals with accelerated motion of bodies. Rigid body: The combination of a large number of particles, the relative movement between its parts remain constant or negligible. 7

8 Space - associated with the position of a point P given in terms of three coordinates measured from a reference point or origin. Force: Action of one body on another may be push or a pull force. ( F =ma ) Weight: Force which attract the body toward the centre of the Earth. (W=mg ) Particle: A body have a mass with negligible dimension. 8
