Oysters and Water pollution By Johnson Obi

Water Pollution Water pollution is an on going major global problem. Water pollution is made up of many things including : Raw sewage Waste Oil pollution Industrial waste Etc.

Water pollution Oil spills make up about 12% of the oil that enters the ocean while the rest are from drains and dumping Industrial facilities use freshwater to carry away waste from the plant to goes into rivers, lakes and oceans. Sewage is treated in water treatment plants and the waste is often disposed into the sea.

Billions of gallons of untreated sewage flow into New York water annually, its been going on for so long that it has become a norm.

Flint water April 2014 marked the date of the crisis in Flints drinking water. Flint changed its water source from “Detroit water and Sewerage Department” to Flint River, which the inhabitance of Flint had found out its new source of drinking water had a series of contamination problems with includes lead contamination.

Flint water This series of problems led to serious health dangers. Between 6,000 – 12,000 children have been exposed to drinking water with high levels of lead.

With so many causes of water contamination it getting harder to tell when and where to avoid contact with certain water despite a new law mandating prompt public notice. One of the many solutions to decreasing water pollution that the world is facing is the project of man made oyster reefs.

Oyster reefs (as name sake) are home to many oysters and other sea life

Oyster Reef Restoration Oysters are filter-feeders. They suck in water around them, filtering out the plankton, bits of dead animals and waste then spit the water back out free of all that waste.

Oyster Reef Restoration Experts have estimated that each oyster can clean up to 50 gallons of water a day

Billion Oyster Project The New York Harbor school has an active project called the “Billion Oyster Project”. This is a long-term plan to restore one billion oysters in New York Harbor over the next 20 years to restore the ecology and economy of their local marine environment.

Billion Oyster Project They have partnered up with the Brooklyn Navy Yard to help with their goal with started in 2010. Right now their current status is that they restored 16 million oysters, filtered 19.7 trillion gallons of water and removed 72,500 pounds of Nitrogen.
