Lesson 6

Romans 9:30-33 Paul’s question: What shall we say then? Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness attained it by faith. Israel: pursued their own law of works and did not attain righteousness. Israel failed to believe Is. 28:16 They stumbled over the stumbling stone

Romans 10 Verses 1-4 Paul’s heart’s desire and prayer was for Israel’s salvation He had great sorrow and grief because of their unbelief (9:2) They had a zeal for God; not according to knowledge They tried to make their own way based on works They didn’t know God’s righteousness – by faith They did not subject themselves to His way (8:7)

Application Righteousness is for everyone who believes Christ is the end of the law for righteousness Zeal and salvation are NOT the same Zeal without knowledge produces salvation by works and not by faith

Romans 10:5-13 Paul quoted Moses in regard to the Law It is holy, righteous and good Problem: Jews didn’t keep it from the heart Verses 6-8: No person can do what Christ did Context of Deut. 30:12-14 There is nothing man can do Christ did everything needed for righteousness Abyss: Bottomless, the pit, immeasurable depth; of Orcus, a very deep gulf or chasm in the lowest parts of the earth used as the common receptacle of the dead and especially as the abode of demons.

How is a person saved? Confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord Confess: homologeo – to agree with, to admit or declare one’s self guilty of what one is accused of; to declare openly Lord: kyrios – the owner; one who has control of the person; the master. The possessor and disposer of a thing. God the Messiah. Believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. Heart: kardia – The centre of all physical and spiritual life, the will and character.

Romans 10: 9-10 Fully persuaded so as to be totally surrendered These verses do not show an order, but what is necessary for salvation. “Confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord” Confess Jesus as Lord/Messiah = salvation Believe in your heart = righteousness Whoever believes in Christ will not be disappointed All who call upon His name will be saved (Joel 2:32)

Romans 10:14-15 How will men call? How will they believe? How will they hear? How will they preach? Those who are sent have beautiful feet (Is. 52:7) People believe the word of faith which starts with those being sent with it and preaching it Those who hear can believe it and call on Christ for salvation

Romans 10:16-17 What happened to Israel? They didn’t all heed/believe what they heard Is. 53:1 Who has believed our report and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? God’s Word did not fail – Romans 9:6 Israel didn’t believe His Word Faith from hearing, hearing by the Word, one is sent with the gospel, that one hears, calls….salvation

Romans 10:18-21 Paul’s question: Surely Israel has never heard, have they? Indeed, they have Ps. 19:4 “Their voice has gone out into all the earth… They = creation Romans 1:19-20 Man is without excuse; God has made Himself known Those who call upon His name WILL be saved

Romans 10:18-21 Surely Israel didn’t know, did they? Yes, they knew. Deut. 32:21 “I will make you jealous…..” Moses told them Is. 65:1 “I was found by those who did not seek Me” God’s plan always included the Gentiles

Romans 10 compared with 9 Gentiles who did not seek God, found Him Israel didn’t seek, even though God stretched out His hands to them all day long Israel is a disobedient and obstinate people The Gentiles would make Israel jealous The Gentiles heeded/obeyed the glad tidings Israel didn’t

What about YOU? Have you heeded? Do you believe and confess with your mouth, heart and life? Are YOUR feet beautiful because you bring the Good News of Jesus Christ?
