DETAIL ANALYSIS IMAGERY/FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Style Analysis Mini-Lesson

PERSPECTIVE ON DETAIL ANALYSIS o This is likely the most familiar area of analysis for you. However, the detail analysis should be more than a list of devices and images presented in a piece of literature. o Your analysis of figurative language and imagery used in the text should include explanations of the deeper meaning behind the author’s choice to include each detail rather than a simply literal restatement of the detail. o Each of these explanations should connect back to theme and tone.

LOOKING AT THE DETAILS 1. Identify the details included with context and labels when appropriate. o “Until then I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor” (Cisneros 9). o This is an example of a metaphor; Esperanza is identifying herself as an anchored balloon. After describing the relationship and dynamic between her brothers, sister, and herself, she closes the chapter, “ Boys & Girls,” with this image.

LOOKING AT THE DETAILS 2. Analyze the specifics of the detail and connect to connotative meaning. o “Until then I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor” (Cisneros 9). o By identifying as a balloon, Esperanza is willing herself the characteristics of the object of this comparison. She sees herself as someone who stands out and draws attention to herself as indicated by the bright color choice – red. The nature of a balloon that can be anchored implies that like a helium balloon, she is full of the potential to soar above the earth, the everyday, achieving a unique perspective and freedom. Finally, her decision to anchor herself, reflects the lack of freedom and the immobility she feels as a result of her family dynamic and lack of friends as she arrives on Mango Street. She is full of potential, straining against her restraints, and waiting for her chance to break free.

LOOKING AT THE DETAILS 3. Make connections between details in order to demonstrate change, relationships, etc. in order to create meaning over the course of the text as a whole.
