Welcome to All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church Assisted hearing devices are available at the Welcome Table in the Small Hall

Prelude Gratitude By: Michele McLaughlin played by Sharon Skidgel

Music Notes Rachmaninoff's inspiration for this mournful prelude was Arnold Böcklin's painting, "Die Heimkehr" ("Homecoming"). Rachmaninoff viewed this painting as a man returning from a funeral of a loved one with whom he'd shared the house at which he's looking. Once a place of happiness, the house now seems distant and strange. The harmony, especially in the section before the return of the main theme, shows the influence of Debussy in its mistiness and ambiguity.

Music Notes In much of this piece, the separate hands are each complete: You hear this kind of figuration in Bach's solo works for violin and cello. But together they form something far more beautiful and harmonious.

Amazing Grace! words: John Newton music: Columbian Harmony #205 in Singing the Living Tradition Opening Hymn

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see. Verse 1

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! Verse 2

Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ‘tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. Verse 3

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun. Verse 4

Chalice Lighting Catherine Grandorff ASUUC Member

We light this chalice in respect for the interdependent web of all creation of which we are a part.

But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived. From Little Bee by Chris Cleave.

May we be reminded here of our highest aspirations, and inspired to bring gifts of love and service to the altar of humanity. May we know once again that we are not isolated beings but connected, in mystery and miracle, to the universe, to this community and to each other. – Anon.

Reeb Children’s Benediction words and music: Ian W. Riddell Singing the Children Out

Go in love, our hearts go with you. Go in joy, our hopes go too. Learn in love and grow in wisdom. Shine your light in all you do.

Reading Gary Harrison ASUUC Board of Trustees Responsive Reading

Gary: Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself. Congregation: They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but not seek to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The Archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and bends you with might that the arrow may go swift and far. Let your bending in the Archer’s hand be for gladness. -- Kahlil Gibran

Offertory Reading Gary Harrison ASUUC Board of Trustees Responsive Reading

Gary: What good is it my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? Congregation: If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them:

“Go in peace. Keep warm and eat your fill.” And yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that?

So faith, by itself, is dead. Show me your faith apart from works, and I, by my works, will show you my faith. ---James 2, Christian Scriptures

We give thanks for those moments when we can feel that we live in a world that is not indifferent to our need. We all have so many needs– a thousand prayers– a thousand needs– that really only need one answer: let the world not be indifferent. And may we live and be with each other in the way that shows this truth whatever the day brings: that neither are we indifferent to each other. – Judith Meyer

Offertory Music Everything is Holy Now Music and lyrics by Peter Mayer played by Sharon Skidgel Sung by Heidi Cooper

Lyrics When I was a boy, each week On Sunday, we would go to church And pay attention to the priest He would read the holy word And consecrate the holy bread And everyone would kneel and bow Today the only difference is Everything is holy now Everything, everything Everything is holy now

Lyrics When I was in Sunday school We would learn about the time Moses split the sea in two Jesus made the water wine And I remember feeling sad That miracles don't happen still But now I can't keep track 'Cause everything's a miracle Everything, Everything Everything's a miracle

Lyrics Wine from water is not so small But an even better magic trick Is that anything is here at all So the challenging thing becomes Not to look for miracles But finding where there isn't one

Lyrics When holy water was rare at best It barely wet my fingertips But now I have to hold my breath Like I'm swimming in a sea of it It used to be a world half there Heaven's second rate hand-me-down But I walk it with a reverent air 'Cause everything is holy now Everything, everything Everything is holy now

Lyrics Read a questioning child's face And say it's not a testament That'd be very hard to say See another new morning come And say it's not a sacrament I tell you that it can't be done

Lyrics This morning, outside I stood And saw a little red-winged bird Shining like a burning bush Singing like a scripture verse It made me want to bow my head I remember when church let out How things have changed since then

Lyrics Everything is holy now It used to be a world half-there Heaven's second rate hand-me-down But I walk it with a reverent air 'Cause everything is holy now

Lyrics No matter what we do No matter what we say We're the song inside the tune Full of beautiful mistakes And everywhere we go The sun will always shine And tomorrow we might awake On the other side We're beautiful No matter what they say Yes words won't bring us down Oh no We are beautiful In every single way."

Closing Words Dale Kemmerer ASUUC Member

Because of those who came before, we are; in spite of their failings, we believe; because of, and in spite of the horizons of their vision, we, too, dream. Let us go remembering to praise, to live in the moment, to love mightily, to bow to the mystery. – Barbara Pescan

Despite inconvenience, despite personal worries or concerns, despite knowing with certainty what impact will be made, there are those who try, against great odds, to make this world a better place. Why not you? Why not me? - The Rev. Manish Mishra Marzetti, Minister Unitarian Universalist Church in Cherry Hill, NJ

Blue Boat Home words and music: Peter Mayer #1064 in Singing the Journey Closing Hymn

Though below me, I feel no motion standing on these mountains and plains. Far away from the rolling ocean still my dry land heart can say: Verse 1

I’ve been sailing all my life now, never harbor or port have I known. The wide universe is the ocean I travel, and the earth is my blue boat home. Verse 1 (cont.)

Sun my sail and moon my rudder as I ply the starry sea, leaning over the edge in wonder, casting questions into the deep. Verse 2

Drifting here with my ship’s companions, all we kindred pilgrim souls, making our way by the lights of the heavens in our beautiful blue boat home. Verse 2 (cont.)

I give thanks to the waves upholding me, hail the great winds urging me on, greet the infinite sea before me, sing the sky my sailor’s song: Verse 3

I was born upon the fathoms, Never harbor or port have I known. The wide universe is the ocean I travel, and the earth is my blue boat home. Verse 3 (cont.)

Postlude Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel Played by Sharon Skidgel

Lyrics Excerpt "Look into the window of my mind Reflections of the fears I know I've left behind I step out of the ordinary I can feel my soul ascending I'm on my way, can't stop me now And you can do the same, yeah What have you done today to make you feel proud? It's never too late to try What have you done today to make you feel proud? You could be so many people If you make that break for freedom What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Lyrics Excerpt I can feel my spirit rising We need a change So do it today 'Cause I can see a clear horizon What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Lyrics Day after day, We'll find the will to find our way, Knowing that the darkest sky Will someday see the sun— When our long night is done... There will be light... There will be light. When we open up our lives, Sons and daughters, Husbands, wives— And fight that fight... There will be light."
