How do we know what plants to grow? Objective: to identify the pH of some different soil samples and suggest some plants that would grow Good You can describe the method for testing the pH of soils Better You can identify the pH of different soils Best You can suggest plants that will grow in that soil and ways of changing the pH

Method Watch the demonstration Now fill out your worksheet You can describe the method for testing the pH of soils

Bert has a pink hydrangea in his garden. Ernie lives in another street. He loves Bert’s hydrangea so Bert gave him a cutting of it. Ernie grew the cutting in his garden but it turned out like this: ‘I wanted a pink hydrangea!’ Ernie shouted. Why did his hydrangea turn out blue? What could Ernie do to make it pink? Hydrangea Plants You can suggest plants that will grow in that soil and ways of changing the pH

To Finish Write a sentence containing no more than 10 words about what you have learnt today

CHANGING SOIL PH Farmers and gardeners can choose only plants that prefer the pH of their soil. Alternatively, they can add chemicals that change the soil pH to suit the plants they want to grow. If soil is too acidic, lime (calcium oxide) is a base that can be added. The lime neutralizes the acid in the soil and so increases the soil pH. What type of chemical can be added if soil is too alkaline?
