3 “I Love to Read” Logs We got off to a great start by reading a total of 2543 minutes! Way to go kids! You need to read at least 100 minutes a week to earn a ticket for the Reading Fair. Extra minutes beyond 100 help us with our school goal. Keep up the great reading and remember to turn in your second week’s minutes next Tuesday. Happy Reading!

5 I Love to Read Month February is I Love to Read month. We will be celebrating the fun of reading with many great activities throughout the month: –February 19th – Book Character Day –February 26th – Hippie Day –February 29th– Pajama Day to end “I Love to Read” Month

6 Mystery Readers You could join our love of reading in 1 st grade by being a mystery reader. A few days before you come to read, I will ask you to share 3 clues about yourself and/or your family (how many kids are in your family, what you like to do, trips you've taken, etc.) On the day of your visit, we will try to guess who it might be before enjoying the story you brought. If you are unable to read at the time listed but would really enjoy reading in our room, please send me an email and we'll find a time for you! 7 Author Visit Author and former teacher, Patrick Mader will be visiting our school February 16th and 17th for "I Love to Read" month. Our class will be able to chat with him the morning of the 16 th.

8 101 st Day of School We will be celebrating the 101st day of school with some fun 101 Dalmatians activities. Your child is invited to wear black and white (like a Dalmatian) on Wednesday, February 17th. If you have an old, white shirt you could draw black spots on it with a sharpie. It should be a fun day!

10 Tiger Fun Fair: DES PIE will host our annual Tiger Fun Fair on Saturday, February 27th from 4-8pm at the TAC. Games, inflatables, silent auction, food and lots of fun. Many volunteers are needed to make this event a success. 11 Outside Recess Even though it may be warming up, students will not be able to play in the snow if they do not have snow pants or mittens. Please send gloves/mittens and hats! Label everything!

12 We will celebrate your child’s birthday here at school If you decide to send store bought treats or goodies please send 24 of them. If it's a weekend day we will celebrate the Friday before or Monday after. We will also celebrate ½ birthdays. If this doesn’t work for you we can celebrate it in May. 15 Spelling Words: 14 words this week!! –so, go, no, bone, home, hole, joke, poke, rope, stove, chose, wrote, *think, *because (big elephants can always use small elephants) *Practice writing sentences with word wall words, words with –long vowel sounds, and vowel-consonant-e (VCE) word endings so your child will be prepared to write a sentence on the final test.

16 Long Vowel Sounds: We will continue to have a vowel-consonant-e pattern. We will begin to explore vowel pairs such as, ai, ay, ee, and ea. Please continue to help your child read the words and understand the spelling rule. Look for the spelling rule in other words you come across.

20 Word of the Week Extra: Each week, your child can receive a sticker for their sticker book by writing down our special word/phrase of the week along with a parent signature. This word also helps me to know that you have seen the newsletter! They love stickers! Word of the week: Presidents’ Day

21 Family Journals Family Journals are due each Monday. Please find your child’s current entry and use the next empty page to complete your response to your child. I also encourage you to use the letter format to allow your child to see and experience that format.

22 General Homework Expectations Mondays: Spelling words and word wall words will come home (practice these words to be ready for the spelling test on Friday Wednesdays: Wednesday work: students complete the comprehension page as well as practice reading the words on the opposite side. When you feel your child is confident in knowing the words and has completed the comprehension page, please return it to the classroom. It is due by the following Tuesday at the latest. Monday through Friday: Math homework will be sent home each day, except Wednesdays. I expect each page to come back the following day.

24 Volunteering The media center is also looking for volunteers to help shelve books. In the past, some parents have volunteered in the library right before coming to our room to volunteer. Please contact them beforehand to see if they have an available opening. Thank you for ALL your help! We couldn’t do it without you!!!
