2016 CCFD Training Agenda Why people give to CCFD Getting people to give to CCFD Pledge Forms, Agency Booklet, website Promotional materials Next steps Why we should give to charity

Giving isn’t a business transaction, it’s a human connection.

Why people give to CCFD Someone I know asked me to give I felt emotionally moved by someone’s story I want to feel like I’m changing someone’s life I feel a sense of closeness to a community or group I want to memorialize someone (who is struggling or died of a disease) I was raised to give to charity – it’s tradition in my family I want to be “hip” and support this charity I feel fortunate and want to give something back to others I want to have a good image for myself and my department

Remember this about giving… People act from the heart, not the head Giving is a personal act The act of giving is immediate

Getting people to give to CCFD Know what they care about Make it easy to give (send that on-line link 3-5 times) Never, ever surprise them (give them a heads up) Kill’em with silence (Ask and then be quiet) Ask for their advice ( Ask for money, you’ll get advice. Ask for advice, you’ll get money) Be specific on amount (Would you consider giving $25)

I was volunteering at Wesley Food Pantry and overhead this conversation as I was walking down the food aisle. A 10 year old boy excitedly asked his father: “Are we going to have food to eat tonight?” The dad replied yes and the boy pleaded with his father – can we have Ravioli instead of the Spaghettios?” My heart skipped a beat as I realized that this family came to the pantry hungry. They didn’t have enough food to eat and the generous donations of U of I employees and retirees helped feed this family and many others in our community. Katie Thomas

We give because someone gave to us. We give because nobody gave to us. Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand, Mine to yours, yours to mine. What you did not have, and I gave you What I had to give - - together, we made Something greater from the difference. Alberto Rios
