6 Emotional Appeal (in a satiric sense!) Because this text is satire, its LOGICAL APPEAL is, in a sense, also an EMOTIONAL APPEAL – We are appalled that anyone can propose such a plan in this cold, calculated manner We react to the LOGIC of the plan in an EMOTIONAL manner! Let’s look at other ways Swift messes with our emotions in this backwards way!

11 Swift’s Purpose Who was Swift’s audience (don’t say the poor; they probably couldn’t read or didn’t have the means to get a hold of reading material!) ? What was Swift’s purpose? Look over all the EFFECT responses you’ve written. How has Swift’s use of various techniques in this text helped him achieve his purpose? (Look at your key words. Put together a paragraph/essay that addresses each of these key words. Explain Swift’s purpose, the techniques he uses, and the specific way each technique helps him achieve his purpose.)
