1 Topic Web Year 6 Redwood Class Terms 3 and 4 Topic –Time for Change January – March 2014 LITERACY -Aesop's fables – writing our own fables with morals, interviewing the animals from the fables, wanted posters for the fox in the fables. -Myths and legends – How are myths and legends used to tell stories of the past? Writing our own myths and legends. -Arguments– looking at both sides for an against rationing during the war. -Information texts – France – as part of work on France the children will be researching information to create a class information to be used on our trip to France. -Persuasive writing – campaigns from the war! How do we persuade people, writing our own campaigns. -Poetry writing – spring time is here. -Biography writing – French artists biographies. -During terms 3 and 4 the children will be developing their grammar and punctuation skills, and revising work for their KS2 SATs. NUMERACY -Ratio and proportion – investigating ratio and proportion looking at rations from WW2. -Measures and handling data –, convert to scale, record statistical information using Census information from the past finding the best ways to record information. -Reasoning about numbers – making statements, creating animal number sequences, rules for number sequences. -4 operations including decimal numbers - Area and Perimeters – Designing our air raid shelters following given instructions. -Solving multiple step word problems which use all 4 operations. -Probability – giving explanations to explain probability. -During these terms the children will be revising the skills needed for the Key stage 2 SATs. SCIENCE Reversible and irreversible changes Mixing different materials to cause changes. - Separating Mrs James’ cooking disasters! - Popping Canisters – making a gas. - Making slime and play dough – changes that can’t be reversed. - What happens to different materials when they burn? Interdependence and adaptation - Plant magic how plants use photosynthesis. - Bring them to life– living processes how do they work? - Habitat day– becoming animals in food chains of different habitats creating our own habitats. - New creations – creating animals for different habitats. HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY World War 2 Which countries were involved in the war? Why were some people persecuted and who was Anne Frank? Redwood Survivors – how can we survive on rations? Making our own air raid shelters. Making our own Enigma codes. Becoming evacuees for the day. Vive La France Roaming Redwood – Making travel guides for Paris. Making our own maps of Paris Eiffel tower chalk drawings and making our own models of the Eiffel tower, How has France changed? Art Nouveau – how it changed French art Redwood designers – why is fashion important in France? PHSE Celebrating differences Friendship poems Why are we unique? Challenging stereotypes. Why should we all be treated equally. Public speaking challenges in class – why should difference be celebrated. How has the past changed for more equalities? Challenging racism and how we can do this in a positive way-How did Nelson Mandela change the world? Music Sound Sources Silent movies – how music was used in past films. Using the computers to create music Creative composers – making compositions for our History videos Songs from the past – learning war time songs. Rhythm and pulse Learning World War 2 songs. Creating cyclic patterns. Redwood rockers – composing our own pieces with decorated accompaniments. Physical education DANCE- Susan Hill,Hockey -Dribble with control and pass whilst travelling. -Pass the egg – animal eggs to their nests practising dribbling techniques. -Egg stealing – taking possession of the Hockey ball in a game. -Playing full games of Hockey. Dance – Susan Hill, Gymnastics - Leaping Landings – Developing the correct posture for landing -Spectacular Shapes – 9 key shapes of gymnastics -Sparking Sequences – Developing sequences using balances, shapes, jumps and lands. -Amazing Apparatus – How many different ways can we use one piece of equipment? -Team Challenges – balancing using everyone in your group! ART AND DESIGN What a performance French artists – Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, Look at headwear/dress from different cultures and times in history. Designing a mask to represent France Using different techniques for printing/dying/painting materials. Redwood French fashion show using recycled materials. Shelters Britain in the Blitz – which materials are best for Air raid shelters? Redwood constructors – how to make the best and safe structure. Making our own air raid shelters. ICT Multi-media Presentations -Link it together – using hyperlinks to link pages of information. -Website designer – create website pages about animals with links for people to navigate. -Tony Robinson – becoming historians and creating historical films. -France presentations – making our presentations researching France for our trip. Spreadsheets - Using excel to sort data, sorting fruit and vegetables into different criteria. - Creating formulas in spreadsheets to create numeracy games. - Using labels and numbers into a spreadsheet. - Design a times table game using excel for other children. - Organising data and statistics from the past RELIGIOUS EDUCATION How do we make moral choices? -What do Hindus believe about the nature of God? -What is the symbol of the three female Devis in the Hindu Faith? Creating art work to represent this. -The difference between Hindu Deities and Christian Saints -What are the different types of help and support people can give to others? -Exploring the festival of Navratri and how it can help Hindus make good moral choices. -Learning traditional dances from the Navratri festival. Easter -Palm Sunday – Palm crosses and their significance. -The last supper what does it mean to Christians? -New beginnings. -Easter Gardens – making a whole class Easter garden. -What do we value and why is it important to us?
