2 WHAT IS HYDRATION? Hydration is the supplying of water to your body. It is important to keep your body hydrated in order for your body systems to function. Drinking water helps you maintain body temperature, body function, and brain function.

3 BENEFITS OF HYDRATION Hydration can boost your metabolism. Water is used for digestion. Being hydrated causes you to be tired. Being hydrated helps you physically perform better.

4 WATER SOURCES You don't need to drink just water to stay hydrated. Coffee, unsweet tea, and low fat milk are all sources of water. Oatmeal, lettuce, tomato, broccoli, low fat vanilla yogurt, and ice cream are all sources of water too.

5 WHY IS HYDRATION IMPORTANT Dehydration causes you to be tired and is the number one cause of midday fatigue. Humans have an unquenchable thirst for water as it is used to carry out necessary body functions. Drinking soda doesn't actually quench your thirst and can actually make you more dehydrated.

6 HOW IMPORTANT IS WATER? Water is very important to your body's health. Your blood is made up of 79% water. Overhydration happens when you drink too much water too fast and the balance of sodium to water is unbalanced.

7 OVERHYDRATION Overhydration happens when you drink too much water in a short period of time. Overhydration is also known as water intoxication and water poisoning. Cases of overhydration are about as rare as cases of dehydration.

8 WHAT CAUSES OVER HYDRATION? Overhydration is caused by water being added too quickly to your system and can severely harm or even kill you. When you drink water too fast the amount of sodium in your blood gets too low and you don't have enough electrolytes it could cause your organs to shut down.

9 HOW CAN YOU OVERHYDRATE? 9% of runners overhydrate because they drink as much as they can during races. The best way to prevent overhydration is drink when you are thirsty and when you are physically active.

10 SYMPTOMS OF OVERHYDRATION Some common symptoms of overhydration are seizures, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms are similar to those of heat stroke and exhaustion.

11 NOTABLE CASES OF OVERHYDRATION British Actor Anthony Andrews survived a case of water poisoning. In 2003 when he was playing Henry Higgins in the musical My Fair Lady, he consumed up to 8 liters of water per day. That caused him fall unconscious and be in intensive care for three days. Five years after Andy Warhol's death his family accused the hospital where he had his gallbladder removed of causing his death by giving him too much fluid post surgery. Their evidence was that he weighed 128 pounds when he was admitted and his autopsy weight was 150 pounds.

12 HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOU DRINK? The amount of water you should drink depends on your body weight and your activity level. If you are well hydrated then you shouldn't lose more than 2% of your body weight during a workout.
