AIM: How can we determine if something is living? DO NOW: Are you alive? Are you sure? List at least 5 characterisitcs that make you a living thing Homework:Plant research questions due Tuesday
2
Homework: Plant Research Use the internet, the library or interview an adult to answer the following questions: 1- What is a plant? 2- Explain seed germination. 3- What is wheat grass? 4- Where does wheat grass grow normally? 5- List at least 5 elements or compounds needed for plant growth
3
Tuesday 9/6/16 AIM: How can we be successful in the Living Environment? DO NOW: 1- Get an Index card and a grade expectations sheet 2-Read through the grade expectation sheet. HOMEWORK: Get contracts signed

Problem A Jack has a major crush on Jil. During study hall he finally decides to write her a note and ask her out. The note passes through 5 people before Mrs. Jones grabs it. Mrs. Jones wants to know who was involved in passing the note. Your task: Use the clues to determine: the order of people the note passed through The color each person was wearing The subject each person was studying
11
Clue 1: The girl studying English passed it to Paul who then passed it to the girl in green Clue 2: Tiffany passed it to the boy in Blue who gave it to Alexis who was reading Clue 3: The girl in black gave it to Jil Clue 4: Jack first gave it to Mary who was studying English Clue 5: The girl in black who was reading got the note from derrick Clue 6: Paul was wearing yellow and studying Italian Clue 7: Derrick was studying French Clue 8: The girl in green was studying science Clue 9: The girl in pink passed it to the boy studying Italian

Wednesday 9/7/16 AIM: How do we know we are alive? DO NOW: HOMEWORK: Practice regents questions 1-5
14
Are you alive? Are you sure? How do you know? List ALL the characteristics that living things display.
15
Discuss with the person next to you the characteristics you listed. Are they the same? Are they different? Do you agree with them?
16
Observe the pictures below. Characterize each one as living or non living and explain why
17
List 5 things other than animals that are living
18
What is biology? Bio- life Logy- the study of This includes both the visible world of plants and animals as well as invisible world of bacteria and algae
19
What are some other scientific studies? Chemistry Physics Anatomy and Physiology Embryology
20
Thursday 9/8/16 AIM: How can we determine if something is living? DO NOW: If you were sent to a foreign planet and you came across two “things” How would you tell if they were living? HOMEWORK: Regents packet questions 6-10 QUIZ TUESDAY Characteristics of Life

24
How would you define Life?
25
Friday 9/9/16 AIM: What are the characteristics of life? DO NOW: What characteristics describe living things? Write them at the top of each column column under the heading Homework: get your binder or 5 subject notebook, pens and pencils by Monday
26
Answer: Life is defined according to specific characteristics The characteristics vary slightly but there are nine characteristics always solid Cellular Movement Require energy Metabolism Growth and development Reproduction Responsiveness Heredity Adaptation and evolution
27
Monday 9/12/16 AIM: How do we identify things as living? DO NOW: 1-Explain the difference between a living and nonliving thing. 2- Take out your characteristics of life handout from Friday HOMEWORK: STUDY FOR QUIZ

29
Answer: Life is defined according to specific characteristics The characteristics vary slightly but there are nine characteristics always solid Cellular Movement Require energy Metabolism Growth and development Reproduction Responsiveness Heredity Adaptation and evolution
30
The cell: the basic unit of life Some organisms are single celled like bacteria or multi billion celled like us Below is a single celled ameba
31
All Living things are made up of cells Smallest unit capable of life functions UNICELLULAR ORGANISMS Entire organisms is only 1 single cell Bacteria and Protista
32
Multicellular organisms Entire organism is made up of many cells
33
Human Cells
34
Organization of multicellular animals
35
Levels of organization Cell: basic unit of life Tissue Organ Organ System Organism Population Community Ecosystem Biosphere
36
What is movement - a change in position. - a whole organism can move. - internal organs, fluid, blood can move. - cell parts and cells can move.
37
How do you get your energy?
38
Require energy All living things need energy for basic life processes Living things get energy from the food they ingest Some living things can make their own food Ex: plants
39
Require energy Above is the molecular model of ATP the energy producing molecule.
40
Metabolism: all the chemical process performed by a living organism Digestion Circulation Synthesis Ingestion Diffusion Absorption, elimination All metabolic processes need ATP All metabolic process help maintain homeostasis
41
Growth and development Grow in size as well as rebuild and repair
42
Development: change in form
43
Development: differentiation
44
Group share groups of 3 In groups, without your notes list ALL of the characteristics of life
45
Tuesday 9/13/16 AIM: How do scientists define something as living? DO NOW: What was the last meal you ate? How did you get energy from that meal? Homework: Regents packet questions 11-14
47
Reproduction - production of a new offspring or organism. 2 types: 1) sexual – 2 parents 2) asexual – 1 parent ** NOT needed for the individual organism to survive – just the species.
49
Human Reproduction
50
Think about the last time you accidentally stubbed your toe. Almost instantly, you flinched back in pain.
51
Responsiveness: ability to react to a change in the internal or external environment
52
Hereditary: Living organisms pass traits down from parent to child DNA: the inherited molecule
53
Evolution and adaptation Living things are able to adapt and change with changing environments and over time
55
Living vs nonliving Must display all 9 characteristics of life Display some but not all
56
What about viruses? Why are viruses such a big deal? Well, viruses are interesting because they are neither inanimate nor living; a virus is midway between brute matter and living organism Although viruses are not composed of cells, they possess all the other characteristics of living things. They replicate, reproduce, require energy (from living cells), adapt, respond to stimuli and display heredity.
57
Assessment List as many Characteristics of Life that you can remember from today’s lesson
