Welcome to Biology!

About Me 12 th year at JCP Also teach Anatomy/Physiology Married 11 years 2 kids 7 & 5- both are CPS students

Dear Honors Biology Parent/Guardian, My name is Eve Reineke and I am happy to be your students Biology teacher this year. I have been a teacher here at Jones for 12 years and have taught Biology and Anatomy/Physiology each of those years. I apologize for not attending this year’s “Back to School Night” to meet you but I am at my own children’s “back-to-school night”. This year in biology your student will be learning the fundamentals of biology including: cells & cell processes, DNA, Genetics, Evolution & ecology. Critical thinking about how biology is a part of their lives is our goal for the year and we hope to achieve this though: inquiry lessons that allow the student to explore the concept, allow for group discussion and journal writing. Along with science skills we will also work on organization & note taking. In biology we use the desktop computers, demos to illustrate concepts, and laboratory experiments to further explain concepts & work on experimental concepts. We do give notes but we strive to make the class interactive to help all learners excel in the sciences. Please go to the JCP homework website to view a power point introduction about my class. There you can also find the syllabus and FAQ about standards based grading. Thank you so much for coming to “Back to School Night” and feel free to contact me via e-mail anytime to ask questions about anything biology Sincerely, Eve V Reineke

What is covered in Biology? The study of LIFE! A broad class that covers a lot of information and is a base for many specialty areas.

Ecology (how organisms interact with other organisms and the environment) & energy

Evolution (how all organisms cam about according to science!) and Diversity of organisms

Cells-the smallest unit of life! How they work is how we work b/c we are made of a LOT of them

DNA & Genetics (the coding for all known life & how it’s passed on)

What have we been up to so far? Deep time! To relate how short of a time life has been on Earth and an appreciation of how short of a time humans have been around. Claim, Evidence, Reasoning- A science practice in how to analyze and answer questions. What is life? Ask about the objects they had to determine if they were living or not. Ask them what are the 7 characteristics AND what is one flaw with this system of 7 properties. This week: Isopod lab! Ask them about their isopods and what they have done and will be doign.

Communication Office hours are during Ac Lab – Students sign in so you can ask me if they are coming Email is the best way to communicate w/ me. I will be using Google Classroom this year to post HW and extra worksheets. I am working on the guardian function. If you would like me to try and add you please email me at evreineke@cps.eduevreineke@cps.edu
