Welcome to All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church Assisted hearing devices are available at the Welcome Table in the Small Hall

Prelude Marriage D'Amour By: Paul De Senneville played by Sharon Skidgel

Music Notes Rachmaninoff's inspiration for this mournful prelude was Arnold Böcklin's painting, "Die Heimkehr" ("Homecoming"). Rachmaninoff viewed this painting as a man returning from a funeral of a loved one with whom he'd shared the house at which he's looking. Once a place of happiness, the house now seems distant and strange. The harmony, especially in the section before the return of the main theme, shows the influence of Debussy in its mistiness and ambiguity.

Music Notes In much of this piece, the separate hands are each complete: You hear this kind of figuration in Bach's solo works for violin and cello. But together they form something far more beautiful and harmonious.

Faith for the people everywhere, what ever their oppression, of all who make the world more fair, living their faith's confession: faith of the free! What e'er our plight, they law, they liberty, thy light shall be our blest possession. 3

Chalice Lighting Rick Schwarz ASUUC Member

We light this chalice in respect for the interdependent web of all creation of which we are a part.

But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived. From Little Bee by Chris Cleave.

Come into the circle of love and justice. Come into the community of mercy, holiness, and health. Come and you shall know peace and joy. --- Adapted from Israel Zangwill

I knew little of Christ, much less anything that went on Before Christ, but it was quite obvious those sentinels were obscenely out of their element in a museum in Los Angeles, California, circa One Thousand Nine Hundred and Seventy Whatever AD. And yet—through what I later recognized as the wanton pillage mentality of my culture-- in this context, innocuously referred to as "archeology"-- there they irrefutably stood.

Magnificent overseers of an entire civilization, brought across oceans on a boat driven by the victors of history's present telling. I felt incredibly minute and of the flesh in their presence. It was important to remain in contact with what was in the pocket of my shorts: half a bag of M&Ms and two green plastic army men I’d fished out of my little brother’s mouth on the drive to LA.

I think the contents of my pockets comforted me, because fear was certainly present. The sentinels possessed incomprehensible powers for thousands upon thousands of years. They were alive under the desert sand of Egypt long before even my grammy was born. And now, standing in this weird museum room, they were not only alive but pissed as hell to be taken from their place. I could not stop digging the amazement of this whole situation.

I was too young and impatient to understand what compelled people to create all that gold stuff, and too uninterested in the museum itself to put thought into the little explanatory plaques afixed near each piece, but I knew God when I saw her. This I understood. This I respected. This was a whole new slant on art. I grew up and found out 3 more things about art.

1.The individual artist is a medium for making representational and deeply meaningful symbols of the community's collective consciousness, whether they are symbols of the community's religion, love, hurt, power, hate, hope, dreams, fables, foibles, or on and on and on. 2.Some cultures know this, think its divine, and respect the importance of art and artists as perfectly natural manifestos of innate human life, growth, and expression-- without insanely glorifying huge, corporate- induced false images of individual superstars. 3.America is not one of them. 40 Offertory Reading Doris Lancaster ASUUC Board of Trustees

Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year. It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow. Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow comes the harvest and the playtime. --- W.E.B. Dubois

We give thanks for those moments when we can feel that we live in a world that is not indifferent to our need. We all have so many needs– a thousand prayers– a thousand needs– that really only need one answer: let the world not be indifferent. And may we live and be with each other in the way that shows this truth whatever the day brings: that neither are we indifferent to each other. – Judith Meyer

Offertory Music Beautiful perf. by Christina Aguilera played by Sharon Skidgel

Lyrics Everyday is so wonderful Then suddenly It's hard to breathe Now and then I get insecure From all the pain I'm so ashamed I am beautiful No matter what they say Words can't bring me down I am beautiful In every single way Yes words can't bring me down Oh no So don't you bring me down today...

Lyrics No matter what we do No matter what we say We're the song inside the tune Full of beautiful mistakes And everywhere we go The sun will always shine And tomorrow we might awake On the other side We're beautiful No matter what they say Yes words won't bring us down Oh no We are beautiful In every single way."

Postlude Proud by Heather Small Played by Sharon Skidgel

Lyrics Excerpt "Look into the window of my mind Reflections of the fears I know I've left behind I step out of the ordinary I can feel my soul ascending I'm on my way, can't stop me now And you can do the same, yeah What have you done today to make you feel proud? It's never too late to try What have you done today to make you feel proud? You could be so many people If you make that break for freedom What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Lyrics Excerpt I can feel my spirit rising We need a change So do it today 'Cause I can see a clear horizon What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Lyrics Day after day, We'll find the will to find our way, Knowing that the darkest sky Will someday see the sun— When our long night is done... There will be light... There will be light. When we open up our lives, Sons and daughters, Husbands, wives— And fight that fight... There will be light."
