The Eighth Command- ment http://tracksuitceo.files.wordpress.co m/2007/07/10-commandments-of- supporting-your-family.jpg

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor (Exodus 20:16) False testimony means “tell a lie.” Your neighbor stands for “any person you have contact with.”

What does this mean? Martin Luther explains that there are some things we should not do: do not tell lies about anyone, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, And some things we should do: defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.

Commandment 8 involves our speech … What we say does affect others. That would include good ways (defend others, explain in a kind way) And bad ways (lying, slander, gossip) Our sinful heart shows itself by what our tongue does Note what the Bible says about our “tongue” (that is, our choice of words):

James 3:5-12, about “the tongue” Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

James 3:5-12, continued All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Practical steps: When we realize that our words are hurting someone, we have caught our old nature in action! We can squash our old nature, and frustrate Satan, by asking God for forgiveness, and to give strength to our new nature.

What about using our tongue to lie? We might thiknk we are not liars, but What do you thnk about these next 2 scenarios ---

Scenarios #1 I’ve got to get this paper in tomorrow, and it is way past midnight. I’ll just cut and paste this section from Wikipedia online and the teacher will never know I didn’t write it myself. (plagiarism). Do you think it is a sin?

Scenarios #2 I want to buy some cigarettes, I asked my friend who is 5 years older (21) for his I.D. because we look almost exactly alike. I think it will work! Do you think this would be a sin?

James 3:5-12 continued With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Think about how your control of your tongue is coming along. Be honest with God, and ask God to keep helping you. God loves you as you are, but that love also will not leave you as you are.

END OF COMMANDMENT 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More about God’s law You could say that the 10 commandments give the details about what it truly means to love. For example, if you truly love, you will not steal. Romans 13:10 “Love is the fulfillment of the law.”

Jesus…. Jesus gives the 10 commandments a stricter meaning. Mathew 5:21-22 He says: “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.
