2. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor (Exodus 20:16) False testimony means “tell a lie.” Your neighbor stands for “any person you have contact with.”

3. What does this mean? Martin Luther explains that there are some things we should not do: do not tell lies about anyone, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, And some things we should do: defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.

4. Commandment 8 involves our speech … What we say does affect others. 5. James 3:5-12, about “the tongue” Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Think about how your control of your tongue is coming along. Be honest with God, and ask God to keep helping you. God loves you as you are, but that love also will not leave you as you are.
