2 NATIONAL CURRICULUM New National Curriculum introduced in 2014 Children at the end of KS1 in May 2016 first to be tested against new national curriculum.

3 AGE RELATED EXPECTATIONS Test outcomes no longer reported using levels. Age related expectations ; -Emerging (working below age related expectation) -Expected (working at age related expectation) -Exceeding (working above age related expectation)

4 NEW TESTS The new tests consist of: -English reading paper 1: combined reading prompt and answer booklet -English reading paper 2: reading booklet and reading answer booklet -English grammar, punctuation and spelling paper 1: spelling -English grammar, punctuation and spelling paper 2: questions -Mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic -Mathematics Paper 2: reasoning -There is no longer a test for English Writing – carried out through teacher assessment.

5 ASSESSMENT DATES KS1 tests do not have set days for their administration but are completed during May 2016

6 HOW WILL THE TESTS BE MARKED? Although the tests are set externally, they will be marked by teachers within the school. Teacher assessments will also be used to build up a picture of your child’s learning and achievements. In addition, your child will receive an overall result saying whether they have achieved the required standard in the tests.

7 READING TEST New test has a greater emphasis on the comprehension elements of the new curriculum. Paper 1 with the texts and questions combined. Paper 2 with more challenging texts with the questions in a separate booklet. Each paper will have a selection of unrelated texts of increasing difficulties and a mixture of text genres.

8 ENGLISH GRAMMAR, PUNCTUATION AND SPELLING TEST New test introduced this year. Emphasis on technical aspects of grammar. Paper 1 – spelling consisting of an answer booklet. Test to be read by teacher. Children will write 20 missing words in the booklet. Paper 2 – questions consist of a single test paper focusing on pupils knowledge of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. No contextualised questions as in initial sample papers.

9 MATHEMATICS TEST Paper 1: arithmetic assesses pupils’ confidence and mathematical fluency with whole numbers, place value and counting. Paper 2: reasoning assesses pupils’ mathematical fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills.

10 PHONICS CHECK If your child did not meet the required standard in the Phonics Screening Check in Year One, it will be administered in school during the week commencing Monday 13 th June 2016.

11 HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD? Read daily……not just school books but a variety of genres. Read to your child to develop a range of language and vocabulary and ask questions and discuss what you have read. Develop mental maths skills; number bonds, times tables, mental arithmetic etc. Learn spellings especially those following patterns and also high frequency words. Help children with homework and corrections / misconceptions.
