Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Session 2 Moving ICT forward: planning for effective teaching and summative tests
2
Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Planning for teaching Year 9 Last session you made judgements about standards in ICT and how well they are doing in relation to other core subjects Do we know in which aspects pupils are making good progress and those which they are finding difficult? Do we know which aspects teachers are teaching well – and not so well?
3
Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Activity 2.1 Here we have used STU 8.5 as an example but the same process can be applied to any year group. in this school unit 8.5 is taught in the summer term of Year 8 and that the unit is used to provide a summative level of pupil achievement and as a diagnostic tool to inform planning in Year 9. Teachers level each component of the three subsections and then provide pupils with a summative assessment of the level demonstrated in that unit. The SL selects specific pupils’ work for moderation. Modelling, control, marketing groups

Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Handout 12 – report back What does the data tell us about the aspects which pupils find difficult? Which tutor groups are doing less well than others? In which aspects? Are these conclusions anticipated from the overall analysis? Handout 12
6
Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Implications for Year 9 (Activity 2.2) in this school the data suggests that pupils are finding aspects of Models and modelling and Control and monitoring difficult. Some teachers also appear to be having difficulties with this. How do you as SLs investigate these aspects in more depth? focus on medium-term plans for Year 9 Handout 10
7
Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Completing the timeline What can be added automatically? Practice tests FAM materials ICT test window SATS Particular units Revision/ booster sessions

Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Handout 9 ensure that you complete your own timeline following the meeting. Alternatives
9
Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 FAM Lessons the timeline provides the shape and backbone to the year but that there are other considerations to plan in. how are you going to prepare pupils for the test? focus on two aspects: 1.lessons specifically designed to familiarise pupils with the test and 2.approaches to preparing pupils in ‘ordinary’ lessons. flip

Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Handout 13 (the FAM lessons) lessons specifically designed to familiarise pupils with the test approaches to preparing pupils in ‘ordinary’ lessons. (the FAM lessons) handout 11

Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Subject Leader role Subject Leaders have a role in ensuring that plans are carried out and evaluating how effective they are. How they might you monitor and evaluate progress of pupils in Year 9? Complete the timeline by adding monitoring points throughout the year.
12
Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Evaluate teaching and learning Do teachers have excellent subject knowledge and understanding and do they make this accessible to pupils? Does planning for progression ensure pupils acquire new knowledge, skills and understanding? Are pupils able to discuss and develop their ideas? Can pupils plan their work and solve problems? Do lessons have clear learning objectives and use a range of strategies to address pupils’ learning needs? Are lesson plans adapted to take account of assessment information? Are schemes of work reviewed in response to results and teacher assessment and adapted to ensure pupils are prepared for assessment and testing? handout 5
13
Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Departmental review and self-evaluation Is the discussion of teaching and learning a standing item on the ICT department meeting agenda? Is there a clear focus on the aspects of ICT teaching that need to be improved across the scheme of work for 8.5 and the Year 9 Case Studies to improve standards attained by pupils? Are there regular opportunities for observation of effective lessons by all teachers of ICT? handouts 7 & 8
14
Secondary National Strategy SLNM Lancashire June 2006 Actions for school-based work By the end of term: 1 complete data analysis for current Year 8? 2 complete for other years? By end of autumn term: 3 complete data analysis for current Year 9? 4 complete target-setting for 2008? By the end of term: 5complete a planning timeline with identified teaching strategies and monitoring points?
