8 Unit 1 The Journalism Industry & Skills for Journalism 1 hr 30 mins examination; weighting 40% Shorter response knowledge based questions Longer response questions assessing understanding and application of the concepts covered The 1hr 30min examination paper is divided into three parts: –Section A will test AO 1 - knowledge –Section B will be used to test aspects of AO 2 and 4 – analysis/evaluation/construction –Section C will be used to test different facets of AO 2 and 4.

9 Unit 2 Communication & Print Controlled assessment: weighting 30% Specification: section 6.3.1, p.18 Production of 2 pieces for portfolio based on research into one original story: –One local compact newspaper format (400 words) –One online broadsheet (500 words) Log and contacts book to be kept during production to show how the research and 2 pieces of writing have developed

11 Unit 2 contd Communication & Print continued The portfolio must show an understanding of: how to gather information for news stories and feature writing; what makes a good story; legal constraints and ethical issues; the target readership of the different print media; the appropriate presentational features of the different print media.

12 Unit 3 Broadcast Media & Communications Controlled assessment: weighting 30% Specification: section 6.3.2, p.19 Production of 2 scripts – format to vary each year e.g. radio, TV, web, etc Media format e.g. Radio, TV, internet, announced in September (first issue 2010) Pre-release elements will have to be adapted within a given timescale.

15 Controlled Assessment rules Task setting – high level, tasks set by CCEA. Unit 2 is self changing each year due to requirement for originality Task taking – time or word limits; supervision of planning and final pieces; control of resources and access Task marking – marked by you, moderated by us.

16 Planning and Research Research not contributing directly to assessable outcomes can be carried out without supervision Other research may be completed under limited supervision – requirements clearly specified Planning and research can be completed in groups but each candidate must produce final version of the tasks individually Teachers are encouraged to give feedback during the planning and research process Gathering the story for Unit 2 can be carried out without supervision

17 Production of the final pieces When planning and research are completed candidates must complete final pieces in sight of the supervisor at all times. Use of resources and interaction with other candidates is tightly prescribed: –Log-book can be brought in for unit 2. –‘Clean’ pre-release material can be brought in for unit 3 Unit 2 must be completed within 4 hours. Scripts must match time limit given e.g. 3 min Once pieces are completed in the time specified under direct supervision candidates cannot make any further changes Teachers must ensure that candidates acknowledge and reference any sources that they use.

20 Sample scheme of work Specification Content Learning OutcomesTeaching and Learning ActivitiesResources The formats of print media Students should be able to: demonstrate knowledge of the different formats of print media: - newspaper; - magazine; and - web-based; Newspaper: - ‘Play’ the Newspaper Card Game – introduction to a range of national newspapers in the UK and red-top tabloids, middle- market tabloids and broadsheet/compacts. - Q and A - regional and local newspapers. How are they similar/different to National newspapers? - Following introductory activity, group presentation on an assigned newspaper reporting on cost, availability, audience, types of stories, front page and general layout. Magazine: - Thought shower the different genres of magazines available on the market. - Present groups with a range of magazines (sports, entertainment, ‘women’s interest’, teenage, men’s health) etc. Pupil gather notes on their publication – layout, intended audience (evidence), cost, range of stories, use of advertising. On teacher’s signal, one pupil rotates from each group to find out information on another style. Those left explain their ‘genre’ to the pupil circulating, who should take notes.
