5 Victories in NJ and NY Christmas Night 1776 – GW surprise attacked Hessians in Trenton – won -Four Days later- Beat British in Princeton 3 British Generals (Burgoyne, St. Leger and Howe) were supposed to meet to take Albany Burgoyne showed up late and lost at the Battle of Saratoga (1777) – 1 st major victory – 6,000 British prisoners

7 The War at Sea Congress created the Cont. Navy in 1775 Had Few Ships  relied heavily on… Privateers – heavily armed private ships John Paul Jones – “Father of the American Navy – “We have not yet begun to fight!”
