4 WORK PLACE LAWS IN AUSTRALIA All workers in Australia have basic rights that are protected by law: Pay Conditions, such as leave How people should be treated at work

6 AWARDS Most jobs are covered by an award There are different awards for different jobs and industries An award sets out : what a boss must provide to a worker as part of their employment worker’s responsibilities to their boss

7 NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE (FROM JULY 2016) $17.70 $672.70 or per hour per week

8 WHAT TYPE OF WORKERS ARE THERE? FULL-TIME PART-TIME CASUAL Generally work 38 hours per week Are paid for a full week’s work Receive entitlements like annual leave and paid personal/carer’s leave Generally work regular hours per week, but less than full-time workers Same entitlements as full-time, but less of them based on hours worked Work on an hourly basis No guaranteed or set hours Don’t get paid personal/carer’s leave or annual leave Don’t get notice of termination Usually receive a higher pay rate

9 BEFORE YOU START YOUR NEW JOB Ask your boss whether you are a full time, part time or casual worker Ask your boss what award you are being paid under Check your duties and hours of work

10 PAY Unpaid work trials Being given goods or services instead of pay A worker should be paid for all hours they work

11 DEDUCTIONS For a boss to take money away from a worker’s pay: if they break something For till shortages If a customer leaves without paying IT IS NOT OK

12 The pay slip is the worker’s record of what they have been paid for the pay period. PAY SLIPS No pay slips Late pay slips Missing details about pay IT IS NOT OK

13 PAY SLIPS Workers must always get a pay slip within one day of being paid The payslip gives the worker important information about their pay and they should keep it somewhere safe
