2 J-1 Student Internship Program This program is only available to foreign students currently enrolled and pursuing a degree at a postsecondary academic institution outside the United States, whose U.S. internship will "fulfill the educational objectives for his or her current degree program at his or her home institution." Student interns may participate in a student internship program for up to 12 months for each foreign degree/major.

3 The Intern program is a structured work-based learning program that: Reinforces an intern's academic study Exposes the intern to American techniques, methodologies, and expertise and expands their knowledge and skills Enhances the intern's knowledge of American culture and society

4 Application Process for a DS-2019 In the J-1 Student Intern Category

5 DS-2019 Processing Time ISSS may take 5-7 days to complete the processing of the Form DS-2019 once ISSS receives a complete application. The department should submit a complete application to ISSS no later than two months prior to the requested J-1 Program Start Date. Be prepared that it may take your incoming J-1 applicant 2 to 6 weeks to obtain a US Visa Stamp if s/he undergoes Administrative Processing / a Security Check.

6 1. Add Applicant to ISD To add a student intern into ISD, click on “Add Visitor” under Record Manager in the left margin. Visitor’s permission should be set to “Read/Write.” After you have added the record you will need to click on the “Tasks” tab and invite the visitor using the email that will be automatically populated with the login and password. J-1 Applicant Must Upload to ISD: English Proficiency Documentation Funding Documentation Copy of J-1 Exchange Visitor’s passport photo page Copies of J-2 dependents' passport photo pages if dependents will accompany J-1 Home University Attestation Form Copy of Current Degree Program Transcripts Proof of Health insurance coverage Insurance Compliance Form if insurance coverage not listed on ISSS website

9 If the J Student Intern Is Locked Out of ISD: Department Administrator should click on “Tasks” and then “Edit Visitor Login and Permissions” Check the “Reset Password” Box

Department must review all documents that J-1 Applicant has uploaded to ISD Please note that the department should ask the J-1 Applicant if the insurance was purchased from one of the vendors listed on our website - if not, an insurance compliance form is required from insurance company. Make sure the insurance dates match the internship letter dates. Send an email to the J Student Intern Applicant to confirm internship and insurance dates.

11 5. Department should submit ISD record to ISSS Department should submit the ISD Record under the “Tasks” tab, “Review and Submit Visitor’s Information” once a complete application is in ISD

12 E nglish Language Proficiency If J-1 Student Intern has not earned a degree from a U.S. institution or if s/he was educated in a country where English is not the primary language of instruction, Student Intern will need to 1) schedule an English Proficiency interview with Temple’s ITA Coordinator OR 2) take a TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic test.

14 A Passing Score for TUTEP is 4.0 or higher. If a scholar receives a score of 3 to 3.9, s/he can retest in 2 months. After 2nd fail, scholar must wait six months to re-test. A scholar may retest no more than three times in a 12 month period. If a scholar receives a score of 2.9 and below, s/he can retest in 6 months. A scholar may retest no more than two times in a 1 ½ year period.

15 Steps for Submitting Tests of Academic English: 1. J-1 Applicant must request that the testing company send a hard copy of the TOELF, IELTS or PTE Academic sore report to Temple University's Graduate School within two years of the applicant's test date. 2. J-1 Applicant must email the scanned test score to Maureen De Lio in Temple University's Graduate School at maureen.delio@temple.edu Applicant must indicate that that s/he is a J-1 Scholar Applicant in the Subject line of the email. maureen.delio@temple.edu 3. TU Graduate School will verify score and forward the scanned test score to ISSS.

16 Steps for Submitting Tests of Academic English:

17 Funding Documentation J-1 Exchange Visitors must be able to document a minimum of $21,000 per year. J-1 applicant must include extra financial documentation for dependents: $4,000/year for a spouse and $2,500/year per child.

18 Funding Documentation Department and J Applicant must document ALL Funding Sources before any Form DS-2019 can be issued. Submit all financial documentation in English. All financial documentation must be uploaded to ISD. Make certain that any Personal Funding is really the applicant’s funding and not income from employment abroad. Many students do not have enough liquid assets to support themselves while in the US.

19 Bank Statements In Applicant’s Name A detailed letter from J-1 applicant explaining how s/he will be able to finance the proposed J program if s/he will not receive any or only partial foreign or Temple funding; Most recent 3–4 Months in English of recent bank statements (per account) on bank letterhead Must demonstrate that funds would be readily available to meet applicant’s expenses (money cannot be frozen - must be “liquid”) Please note that ISSS will not accept Certificate of Deposits in lieu of 3-4 months of bank statements

20 Bank Statements In Sponsor’s Name And Letter of Support Most recent 3–4 Months in English of recent bank statements (per account) on bank letterhead Sponsor must write a letter explaining relation to applicant and declaring support for applicant while s/he is participating in a J- 1 Exchange Program at Temple University Must demonstrate that funds would be readily available to meet applicant’s expenses (money cannot be frozen - must be “liquid”) Please note that ISSS will not accept Certificate of Deposits in lieu of 3-4 months of bank statements

21 Funding For Scholars Who Will Be Employed By A Foreign Institution While In The US: Letter from Employer on Employer's official letterhead and signed by the Employer stating: The salary amount that the J-1 Applicant will receive per month while in the US That the J-1 will continue to receive this salary from the Employer while in the US That the Employer will hold her/his position until J-1 returns to home institution That the applicant will be participating in a J-1 Exchange Program at Temple University

22 Funding from a University For Students Enrolled in a Full-Time Academic Program Abroad Letter from Home Institution on University letterhead signed by a University Official stating: The amount and terms of stipend/salary The applicant will be participating in a J-1 Exchange Program at Temple University

23 Scholarship from a Company or Institution Statement from a company employee, not related to the applicant, on Company/Institutional letterhead, indicating: The amount of funds that have been set aside for scholarship The specific details of what expenses will be paid by the scholarship That the applicant will be participating in a J-1 Exchange Program at Temple University ISSS reserves the right to require the most recent 3–4 Months in English of Company’s recent bank statements (per account) on bank letterhead

24 Scholarship from a Government Letter from Home Government on Government letterhead dated within two years and signed by a Government Official indicating: The stipend/salary per month Details regarding any covered expenses, including living expenses, health insurance That the applicant will be participating in a J-1 Exchange Program at Temple University

28 12 Month Bar on Returning as a J Research Scholar or Professor The 12 month bar applies to a J Student Intern who remains in the US for more than 6 months and wishes to return to the US as a J-1 Research Scholar or Professor.12 month bar Examples: Student Intern from 12/1/16 to 11/30/17 cannot return to US as a J-1 Research Scholar or Professor until 12/1/18. Student Intern from 12/1/16 to 5/31/17 can return to the US as a J-1 Research Scholar or Professor upon completion of academic degree.
