1 Hierarchy of Discipline Procedure Person Responsible for action Action to be taken / sanction Stage 1 1.Minor breaches of class rules. 2.Treating others unkindly (e.g. not sharing. 3.Disrespect of class property. 4.Not paying attention. 5.Shouting out during lessons. Class Teacher Teaching Assistant Supply Teacher Person on duty / Mid-day Supervisors 1.Giving a disapproving look. 2.A verbal warning backed up with appropriately worded expectation and time and space given to respond. 3.Short discussion with child that does not interrupt the flow of the lesson. 4.Give child opportunity for apology. Stage 1

2 This is an example of a Stage 1 behaviour. In this photo the children are deliberately ignoring the Teacher. Why are the children ignoring me? I will give them a disapproving look and hope that they change their behaviour.

Class Teacher Teaching Assistant Person on duty / Mid-day Supervisors 1.speak to child - inform that behaviour is inappropriate. 2.remove pupil from group and give ‘time out’ in the designated classroom area for set time e.g. 2 mins. 3.give child opportunity to apologise. 4.Speak to parents (at the discretion of the teacher). Stage 2

4 This is an example of a Stage 2 behaviour. In this photo the children are arguing. 1+1 doesn’t equal 3, you are wrong! 1+1 is 3! I am right and you are wrong!

Class Teacher Teaching Assistant Person on duty / Mid-day Supervisors 1.Temporary isolation from class – remove to class near-by and give ‘time out’ in the designated classroom area for set time e.g. 5 mins. 2. Give child the opportunity to apologise Parents contacted by teacher. Stage 3

6 This is an example of a Stage 3 behaviour. In this photo one child hurts the other child by hitting him. I am going to hit you!

Class Teacher Teaching Assistant Person on duty / Mid-day Supervisors 1.Time out at the next available playtime for five minutes. 2.Discussion with the staff member about the seriousness of the on-going inappropriate behaviour. 3.Teacher to complete behaviour log (available from LM). Stage 4

8 This is an example of a Stage 4 behaviour. In this photo the child continues to misbehave. I am really disappointed that you have continued to misbehave.

Learning Mentor 1.Removal from the classroom. 2.Time with the learning mentor to discuss behaviour. 3.Miss playtime (15 minutes). 4.Name in Learning Mentor’s Blue Book. 5.Learning Mentor contacts parents. Stage 5a

10 This is an example of a Stage 5 behaviour. In this photo the child has been sent out of their classroom and to the Learning Mentor to discuss their behaviour. We are going to talk about your behaviour today.

Learning Mentor 1.Removal from the classroom. 2.Time with the learning mentor to discuss behaviour and remedial action. 3.Miss playtime (15 minutes). 4.Name in Learning Mentor’s Blue Book for second time. 5.Letter to parents. Stage 5b

Learning Mentor 1.Name in Learning Mentor’s Blue Book for third time. 2.Loss of a privilege e.g. attendance at after school club. 3.Referral to Senior Member of Staff for a warning. 4.Immediate contact with parents to advise of continuing poor behaviour. 5.Possibly begin a Behaviour Improvement Plan in consultation with parents and SENCO if appropriate. Stage 5c

Deputy Headteacher Or Headteacher 1.Name in Learning Mentors book for fourth time – sent to Senior member of staff for a warning and name in red book. 2.Loss of 5 playtimes. Stage 6a

Deputy Headteacher Or Headteacher 1.Referral to Minerva. 2.Name in red book for second time. 3.Letter to parents asking them to see senior staff member. 4.Loss of five lunchtime breaks. Stage 6b

Deputy Headteacher Or Headteacher 1.Name in red book for third time. 2.A meeting with parents to discuss the way forward. 3.Involvement of external agencies e.g. Behaviour improvement team. 4.Possible formation of Pastoral Support Programme if pupil at risk of exclusion. 5.Case Conference with parents and other adults involved. Stage 6c

16 This is an example of a Stage 6 behaviour. In this photo the child has been sent out of their classroom and to the Deputy Headteacher to talk about their behaviour. We are going to talk about your behaviour today with your parents and agree some ways we can help you improve it for the better.
