Group # 1-18

 The alkali metals have only one electron in their outermost energy level.  The alkali metals are the most reactive of all of the metals.  Hydrogen is NOT a member.

 This group has two electrons found in their outermost energy level.  Alkaline Earth Metals are reactive.

 Group 1 – Blue (true /dark blue)  Group 2 – Green (true /dark green)

 The transition elements are in the middle of the table.  Can bond with many elements in a variety of shapes.

 Part of the transition metals  Moved to the bottom to keep the table from being too long  All elements in the actinide series are radioactive & most are man made.

 Groups 3-12 – Pink  Lanthanide & Actinide Purple

 Have three electrons in their outer energy level.  Only one member of this family is a metalloid -- boron.  The others are classified as metals.

 These elements have four electrons in their outermost energy level.  The element carbon is the basis of life. It is found in all living material.

 Elements of this family have five electrons in their outermost energy level.

 Each element has six electrons in its highest energy level.  Oxygen is the most common element (by mass) in the earth's crust.

 Group 13 – Light/lime green  Group 14 – Gold (dark/orange yellow)  Group 15 – Light brown  Group 16 – Sky blue

 This group is very reactive.  The elements in this group are all one electron short of having a complete outer energy level.

 Hydrogen belongs to a family of its own.  Hydrogen is a reactive gas.  Hydrogen was involved in the explosion of the Hindenberg.  Hydrogen is promising as an alternative fuel source for automobiles

 Group 17 – Orange  Hydrogen – Light yellow

 The noble gases do not react with other elements because their outer energy level is full.  Meaning they are stable and happy!

 Group 18 – Red
