Objective: Compare and contrast two key moments in the history of U.S. copyright legislation. Identify and analyze the historical roles that industry, government, authors/artists, and the common citizen have played in copyright history. Clearly and effectively state opinions and facts either in an open debate or in a written format. Bellwork: Do you think copyright laws are moving in the right, or wrong, direction?

 Why did the framers include copyright in the Constitution?  What are the authors' points of view? Do you agree with them?  Are current copyright laws holding up the framers' original balance between creators and the public commons?  What do you think the framers would say about the current state of copyright laws and technology?  What would the framers think about the Internet and file sharing?  Why is copyright law important? What, if anything, would you change about the law?

 You will work in pairs to research a piece of technology from history.  I will hand each of you a small piece of paper with half of a common pair… and half of technology you need to research.  After you find your partner I want you to move to a computer and have one partner sign in.  You will both document the answers in your Multimedia notebook.  You will SHARE your findings with the class

 Who invented, created, or sponsored the technology?  What was the technology designed to do? How was it used?  Who would benefit from using this technology?  What kinds of companies or organizations (stakeholders) might have been concerned about the development of this technology? Why?  Did an aspect of copyright law play a role in controversies about the technology? How?  Where did you find the above information? Provide the sources/citations for your research:

1. Peanut Butter and Jelly 2. Oreo’s and Milk 3. Toothpaste and Toothbrush 4. Ben and Jerry’s 5. Spaghetti and Meatballs 6. Macaroni and Cheese 7. Salt and Pepper 8. Bow and Arrow 9. Ketchup and Mustard 10. Mom and Dad 11. Yin and Yang 12. Romeo and Juliet 13. Ball and Bat 14. Jack and Jill 15. Green Eggs and Ham 16. Mickey and Minnie The groups will present their findings in the following order:

 Recent advances in technology have led to the increased malleability of media like text, music, and video.  Concurrent advances in the speed and flexibility of communication have resulted in the growth of "citizen media," where amateurs and regular citizens are making use of copyrighted content in the process of civic engagement.  Meanwhile, others are using copyrighted content to build a culture of remixes and mashups — essentially multimedia collages — exercising a great deal of wit and creativity in the process.

 The question of whether a given work is protected by fair use usually depends on assessing the facts of the creation in light of the fair use “factors”.  We are going to read the article “Illegal Art” that deals with the issues of fair use.  I want you to complete the Graphic Organizer while reading.
